With the Rhaetian Railway through the Swiss canton of Grisons The Bernina Express runs from Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland in the north of the canton via the villages of Thusis, Filisur, the glamorous ski resort St. Moritz and Pontresina till Tirano in the south, which already belongs to Italy. The railway line which belongs to one of the most beautiful and famous ones in Switzerland, runs through the Albula Valley and the Bernina Massif and passes 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, some of them dizzying high viaducts. From the Bernina Pass, with 2.253 metres the highest point of the route, the train runs downwards to Tirano on 426 metres, partly with a stunning decline up to 7%! The trip by the panorama train of the Rhaetian Railway from Chur to Tirano takes about 4 hours. Since September 2008 there is one reason more for this tourist attraction: The impressive route was recognised as UNESCO World Heritage.
