AMTK Tow Jobs and MN action at Highbridge, NY

This video, shot 10/26/2008 - shows Amtrak in a place where they have not provided regularly scheduled service since the early 1990s. This video was shot in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, near Sedgwick Ave and West 167th Street. Amtrak does not normally operate on the Hudson Line below CP-12 in Spuyten Duyvil, NY. In 1993 Amtrak switched the route of its services to upstate New York (including the Adirondack, Maple Leaf, Empire Service, Ethan Allen, and Lake Shore Limited) into Penn Station New York (NYP). The move to NYP was made possible by the opening of the "Empire Connection", a project which brought the dormant "West Side Line" back to life from Spuyten Duyvil to West 40th Street. Amtrak built a new connection including a 1000-foot tunnel to connect this former New York Central line to the former Pennsylvania Railroad's Penn Station which was used for all other Amtrak Service to New York. Shot during the second of two weekends of scheduled detours of Amtrak's Empire Service. The detours were necessitated by switch replacement being done by Metro North at CP-12 (interlocking) in Spuyten Duyvil, NY. Without being able to access the "Empire Connection" Amtrak had to use Grand Central Terminal in order to provide service to New York City. The exception to the above, of course, was two trains a day in each direction which were rerouted "around the world" down the Hudson Line, up the Harlem Line, and then up the New Haven to New Rochelle, NY (NRO) where they reversed direction and headed West over Hell Gate Bridge and into NYP as if coming from Boston.
