hiroshige - ukiyo-e master
Utagawa Hiroshige was born in 1797. He was a contemporary of the other great artist Hokusai.His most celebrated works were the series 36 Views of Mount Fuji, The 53 Stations of the Tokaido and 100 famous Views of Edo. In 1856 he retired from the world and became a Buddhist monk. He died in 1858 in the great cholera epidemic of Edo. The music here is a piece called Radio Gagaku, played by Forgotten Fish Memory Orchestra.

This is part of a performance of bugaku, ancient Japanese court music (gagaku) accompagnied by dance. This art developed and flourished during the Heian period but is still sometimes performed today. It was recorded during 2008 Spring Grand Festival at Meiji Jingu in Tokyo.
