Hyde Park Bar and Grill at Westgate and 290W in South Austin
Hyde Park Bar and Grill has been in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin since 1982. A couple of years ago they totally stripped a former Grandy's down to a skelton and rebuilt, giving it a much cooler and larger new life. Welcome them to South Austin, the new Downtown. Near Central Market South. wisegeorge.blogspot.com www.wisegeorge.blogspot.com

Lambert's at Guadalupe and Second Street in Downtown Austin
An old building that survived when the rest of the block was torn down to build something new. It's an upscale BBQ joint with their own brand of beer on tap. Nice joint and my first visit. www.lambertsaustin.com wisegeorge.blogspot.com www.wisegeorge.blogspot.com
Hole In The Wall on Guadalupe @ Dean Keeton (26th) in Austin
The first time I ever went to the Hole in the Wall was when I got hired as a painter at the University of Texas at Austin. I had lived here for about three months so far. I went in with two other painters who ordered shots and beer. It was first break at 9:30 in the morning so I had a cup of coffee. The only cup of coffee I ever drank in there. That was twenty seven years ago and I have been back many times since then. Many, many times.
Dog Almighty on South Lamar near Manchaca Rd. in Austin
This is one of the very few hot dog joints in Austin. For 50 cents extra you can have it vegetarian, but that would be criminal and anti Texan. They have a couple of good beers on Tap. It's fast, easy and cheap, my three favorite things. If you add beer, it's my four favorite things. www.dogalmightyhotdog.com www.youtube.com

The Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Road & Lamar in Austin
When you get to the intersection of South Lamar and Barton Springs Road, as you surely will if you come to Austin for the Austin City Limits Festival sometime, you will first see an old gas station made into a bar. Damn good move, and then The Green Mesquite Barbecue (Beerjoint) and you are home baby. I don't know what beef ribs cost now but they were $12.95 for all you can eat back when I could eat plenty. Oh, way more than plenty. I can't do it now and I probably couldn't afford it anymore ...
