Excluding Mount Hermon which rises to around 1,400 metres, the Golan varies in height from 120 - 400 metres above sea level although it seems higher because the Sea of Galilee is 209 metres below sea level making it the lowest freshwater lake in the world and the second lowest lake as the salt water Dead Sea is lower. The ancient Jewish settlement of Gamla was once the capital of the region but was destroyed by the Romans during the first Jewish insurrection. The historians of the time left stories of mass suicides similar to those of Massada although this may have been exagerated as the Romans massacred the occupants. The settlement was rediscovered in 1968. Gamla also boasts a wonderful nature reserve with griffon vultures swirling above waiting for anything tasty that they may spot from afar. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well.
