Aurora near Fairbanks, Alaska

Title:
Aurora near Fairbanks, Alaska

Description:
It's towards the end of the season; soon the sky won't get dark enough for auroras, and already now a blue glow is visible on the northern horizon throughout the night. It starts out with a typical growth phase where a southward drifting arc indicates that energy is building up in the magnetotail. The following substorm is not a very distinct one. The energy appears to be unloaded only partially, and relatively bright and structured aurora continues after the brief, substorm-like event. Unfortunately, the time lapse was interrupted in an untimely manner by a coating of ice forming on the camera lens.

Winter Mirage, Fairbanks, Alaska
A spectacular mirage created by a strong inversion layer makes a fluid horizon after sunset. For some reason this mirage is particularly active with the horizon wobbling up and down with wave motions. At the end the horizon goes almost entirely flat, except for Denali.
Aurora near Wickersham Dome, Alaska
We start out in a substorm growth phase where energy is building up in the magnetotail. What shows during this time are arcs drifting south and eventually out of the field of view. Then things look quiet until the substorm sets off, pushing bright, colored and very dynamic aurora back into the field of view from the south. After the substorm some pulsating aurora is barely visible, but soon a new growth phase sets in with arcs appearing and disappearing, brightening and dimming. As can be ...
Alaskan Night
A fast flow from the west over the hills gives rise to lee waves with clouds forming and dissolving as the air is forced up and down when passing the wave structures. The sky conveniently clears temporarily as an auroral substorm takes place. The moon (half) adds to the scenario.
Aurora near Fairbanks, Alaska
Only modest auroral activity was expected this night, and so much greater was the surprise to realize that the camera had captured what appear to be 3 separate substorms in less than 3 hours (usually you'll be lucky to see one within 2 hours of the last). The onset of the last substorm (1:23) is extremely bright and impressive, but lasts less than a minute and is too fast and dynamic for a time lapse.

Aurora and Rockets
Cleary Summit, Alaska, February 14 2007 This video shows ~3 hours of aurora around magnetic midnight, including a small substorm and with no less than 4 rockets for scientific experiments being launched from nearby Poker Flat (preceded by two test rockets also visible in the time lapse). They release chemical trails in the ionosphere, lighting up in a white color that makes it easy to distinguish from the aurora and allowing to observe wind shear.
