Winter Operations CVSR

Title:
Winter Operations CVSR

Description:
Winter Operations on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Feb. of 2008. For 35 years, and through its vibrant partnerships with the National Park Service and private supporters, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad has provided a distinctive excursion passenger rail experience along the historic Valley Rail Line to Northeast Ohio's residents and visitors. Providing service to,through, and within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park CVSR traverses 51 miles, physically linking the cities of Cleveland,Akron, and Canton to the park and each other. No other community amenity in Northeast Ohio does as much to leverage the spectacular scenic, historic, cultural and recreational qualities of our gorgeous Cuyahoga Valley. CVSR is wheelchair accessible through the use of our Fort Mitchell coach, sponsored by Invacare. CVSR plays an important role in developing a regional approach to the area's travel and tourism industry. In 2007, CVSR transported a record 127,000 riders to special events and recreational activities along and adjacent to Ohio & Erie Canalway. While most were from Ohio, CVSR is attracting an increasing number of riders from other states and countries. Of particular interest to the business community, navigating the Canalway by rail can provide a distinctive entertainment experience for convention visitors, clients and customers who are in the area for a short time. Together with the Scenic Byway and the Towpath Trail, CVSR's "Iron Spine" completes the Canalway's multimodal array of alternative transportation linkages which serve as an economic engine for the communities, businesses and cultural institutions located along its tracks. An effort to extend service an additional eight miles north from Independence is currently underway, bringing the last leg of the original Valley Rail Line back to its original terminus at Tower City in downtown Cleveland. In 2006 sixteen Northeast Ohio organizations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in support of this extension. Once fully extended, CVSR's full potential as a regional visitor transportation system will be realized, and open up the Canalway and National Park to new constituencies.
