Focus Ireland - Four Peaks Challenge - June 2009

Description:
Turas Ireland travelled to film over 87 Four Peaks Teams who scaled the four highest peaks in Ireland's four provinces over the weekend of the 5th-7th June and helped to raise over €412,000 to help people who are homeless. The fun-filled weekend got off to a great start at the Killarney International Hostel on Friday where all 580 participants registered before making their way to the base of Carrauntoohil for the first and highest climb. All teams escaped the rain as they made their way up Carrauntoohil, Mweelrea, Slieve Donard and Lugnaquilla. The challenge ended in the Glen of Immal Bar, Co. Wicklow on Sunday June 7th. Each team climbed a staggering 11,937 feet and completed a road trip of over 800 miles The weekend kicks off in Killarney on Friday morning when each team will register at the Killarney International Hostel before taking a bus to the base of Carrauntoohil. After this climb is completed walkers are bused back to the hostel for a shower and a meal. Teams then hit the road for Galway where we will provide optional hostel accommodation for your team on Friday night. On Saturday teams leave Galway City early on Saturday morning for the drive to Mayo. The climb of Mweelrea starts at approximately 11am. After this climb teams are back on the road to spend the night in Newcastle, Co. Down. Teams are expected to arrange their own accommodation in Co. Down. It's an early start on Sunday morning; the climb of Slieve Donard starts at 6am. Following this climb teams travel to Co. Wicklow where the final climb starts at approximately 2pm. Once all teams have completed their climb the party begins. Certificates are awarded to each participant and a hot meal is available at the base of the mountain for all This was the 10th anniversary of the four peaks challenge ,the entire weekend was extremely well organised with both focus Ireland staff and volunteers ensuring that the complex logistics all went according to plan. This is one of Irelands premier fundraising events of which is a true adventure offering teams a challenge in planning, endurance, teamwork and ensures the rewards of a sense of achievement that will long remain in the memories of all who participated.
