Per San Marco: Walking the backstreets of Venice.

Title:
Per San Marco: Walking the backstreets of Venice.

Description:
Per San Marco: Walking the backstreets of Venice. They say all roads lead to Rome. In Venice, all roads lead to Piazza San Marco. On a recent trip to Venice for carnaval, I wanted to catch what it was like to make the daily trip from my hostel, L'Imbarcadero, to Piazza San Marco: twisting and turning through apparently random alleys and side streets, crossing bridges across canals that look the same, then miraculously finding yourself at Rialto or in the marvellous San Marco. The thing to do in Venice is to get lost: and find your way using the yellow 'Per S. Marco' signs. Sometimes, however, your only guide is instinct, and the considerate graffiti which points the way. I loved these haphazard random wanderings through what feels like the world's oldest amusement park. L'Imbarcadero Hostel is located at: Santa Croce, 1268, (Calle Zen), 30135, near the train station (Ferrovia). Despite it's featuring here, I don't recommend it - overpriced and under-facilitied, though clean and staffed by friendly youths. The opening quote is adapted from a travel blog article by travel agent Arnie Greenberg: "They say that all roads lead to Rome, but in Venice all roads lead to Pizzala Roma or Piazza San Marco. In a city without roads as we know them and where streets are often too narrow to walk two abreast, it is impossible to get lost." His website is http://www.top-travel-ideas.com/. Finally, the music is the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Gold Lion' - the lion is the symbol of San Marco, patron saint of Venice; San Marco always 'showed me where the light is', so to speak.

Music in Venice - violin - Lavena - Salut d'amour
Nice performance live in Venice, April of 2006, at Caffe Lavena (the preferred by Wagner and others), Piazza San Marco. Edward Elgar "Salut d'amour". The assembly, specially the violinist, plays very well. See Lavena live (to the left, with many chairs) at www.comune.venezia.it
