The monks sing the seqeuence of the Dies Irae, which is traditionally said or sung for a Requiem Mass between the Epistle and gradual and before the reading of the Holy Gospel in the Traditional Catholic Mass of all ages. This beautiful sequence was removed from the Requiem Mass after the disaster which was Vatican II 1964 - 1968.

Edited scenes from Tenebrae on Good Friday 2009, from Blackfriars in Oxford. In this video, the Dominican friars sing two responsories during Matins, and the Benedictus at Lauds. The candles are gradually extinguished throughout the service, leaving the church in relative darkness, hence the name of the service: 'Tenebrae' (darkness).

Alma redemptoris mater - Peter Philips (1561 - 1628) from Cantiones Sacrae pro quinis vocibus
The Alma Redemptoris Mater like the Salve Regina is one of the 4 Marian Antiphons sung throughout the Catholic ecclesiastical year. Philips opens this piece with flourishes of contrapuntal polyphony, much as in the style of Palestrina, the piece is joyful and melodious dealing with the subject matter. The Virgin Mary's announcement by the Angel Gabriel that she is to bare the Son of God. The end of the piece is more subdued in a penitential way in a homophonic echo of peccatorum miserere....
