Berlin U-Bahn ghost station in 1989

Title:
Berlin U-Bahn ghost station in 1989

Description:
Someone asked me about it so I thought it might be interesting to post this. It's one of those "nothing happens in it" movies. This clip just shows what it looked like to travel on a West Berlin U-Bahn line under East Berlin, passing through the closed down eastern stations. This was taped few weeks after the opening of the Wall (in early December 1989) when the ride still looked almost identical. The only difference is that when the wall was standing the "ghost station" would be less illuminated and there would invariably be a couple of East German guards with rifles standing on the platform and drinking tea or whatever. Here we are on Line 8. There were two western U-Bahn lines passing under East Berlin, this is the one with no stops in East Berlin (Line 6 stopped at Friedrichstrasse). We left our last West Berlin station Moritzplatz (next to the border crossing Heinrich-Heine-Strasse) and went under several eastern stations already. We are now approaching the last eastern station, Bernauer Strasse. The guards are gone and there is more illumination provided - probably for the cleaning crew in preparation for the station's first opening in 28 years. The train slowing down is very characteristic - they always did that at those ghost stations. We then pick up speed and arrive at the first western station Voltastrasse.

Berliner Unterwelten
On 16 Juli 2008 together with my family we made Tour 1 Dunkle Welten which started at U-bahn station Gesundbrunnen. We went deep underground in a bunkersystem of World War Two. The word 'Toilet' was not used since this was the language of the enemy (England and France). Therefore the word 'Abort' was painted on the wall to give the direction for men and women. It was dark and claustrofobic under the ground. While the guide gave an explenation we sat in that dark and narrow bunker. While ...
U-Bahn 89 noises
This is for sound mostly, it seems I'm not the only one with this sort of odd hobby. It's much better in the original stereo because of the sense of space it projects but youtube does not support stereo sound yet (although they recommend uploading stereo tracks - go figure). Note the presence of station agents making the announcements - they are gone now. Also, no door closing signal.

A quick bus ride to and from Steinstücken (Berlin) ca. 1988
(NB: I put the same video at better quality at tinyurl.com ). Steinstücken was a tiny portion (about 200 inhabitants) of West Berlin that was disconnected from it. In 1972 a land swap with East Germany was arranged to provide direct access to the exclave from the main body of West Berlin. The resulting road was about 1 km long and, naturally, was lined with the Wall on both sides. The video shows first a quick glimpse of an unused S-Bahn track cut off by the Wall on the West Berlin side (in ...
