G.F. Handel (1685-1759) Recitativo: Armindo ardisci e prova Aria: Voglio dire al mio tesoro from Act I, Sc. 4 of Partenope, HWV 27 Comic opera in three acts Libretto by: Silvio Stampiglia Premiere: King's Theatre, London, 24 February 1730 Original Cast in 1730: Partenope: Anna Maria Strada del Pò, soprano Rosmira: Antonia Maria Merighi, contralto Arsace: Antonio Maria Bernacchi, alto castrato Armindo: Francesca Bertolli, mezzo-soprano Emilio: Annibale Pio Fabri, tenor Ormonte: Johann Gottfried Riemschneider, basso In this video: Christophe Dumaux, countertenor (as Armindo) Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen Det Kongelige Teater (Gamle Scene), Copenhagen 11 October 2008 Is it Dumaux singing the recitativo? A bit dubious, that one. If it is him, then he rocks big time! :) Edit: It is Trine Bastrup Møller Eser A review of the premiere that was performed on October 4: http://mostlyopera.blogspot.com/2008/10/copenhagen-andreas-scholl-tuva.html The cast: Partenope: Inger Dam-Jensen Arsace: Andreas Scholl Armindo: Christophe Dumaux Rosmira: Tuva Semmingsen Emilio: Bo Kristian Jensen Ormonte: Palle Knudsen Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen Handel wrote Partenope in 1730, a time in his life when he was free to choose a wider range of librettos. "It was Handel's first comic opera, which broke away from the Opera Seria tradition. It was rejected by the Royal Academy of Music, because of its frivolous nature, with relatively few extended arias and more recitative." - Wikipedia. In the score, the B section is followed with a shortened version of the instrumental introduction, and there's a "Dal Segno" - the Segno being at the beginning of the vocal line. I edited the score accordingly: I removed the conclusion of the B section, placed a Da Capo where Armindo stops singing, removed the Segno of the A section, and displayed again the long introduction. Translation: Recitativo Be resolute Armindo, and attempt, undaunted, to confess yourself a lover; Fortune is oft propitious to the bold. Aria Now to my lovely fair I'll fly, and tell her I despair and die, and tender pity crave. I'll say my heart can only move, by the soft laws of faith and love, and is her beauty's slave.

GF Händel - Partenope Rosmira: Tuva Semmingsen I'm terribly sorry about the quality of this video, but I *have* to share this. This was recorded with my Canon Ixus during the rehearsals of today's Open Air concert in Copenhagen (Royal Danish Opera) - hence the mono sound and awful picture.
