The Caravan Project- Part Three: Magical Moments

Description:
In Part Three you can experience some of the wonder of the amazing Caravan as it presented diverse and fascinating concepts to enchanted crowds. From the many hands-on displays of the Montana Iceman Cowboy Museum and the Lots of Potential Tea Parlor but Lack of Focus Shooting Gallery, to the sublime contemplation of the Portable Cemetery of Intriguing Individuals or the Essence of Our Journeys installation, the Caravan satisfied or whetted a wide range of appetites. The documentation climaxes with the Caravan artist's participation in the Broadus Pet Parade and the rooftop dancing of Jack Fisher. In the spring of 1995, fourteen Montana artists, as individuals or small groups, constructed mobile sculptures, installations and participatory presentations which would travel to seventeen rural venues throughout the state of Montana that summer. The brainchild of Rene Westbrook, the six weeks of travel provided a lot of fun, all sorts of weather phenomena and difficulties along the way. The Montana Artists Caravan was composed of Rene Westbrook, Cathryn Mallory, Bobby Tilton, Leslie van Stavern Millar, Bev Beck and Stephen Glueckert, Joe Batt, Michael Peed, J. Kathleen White, Jack Fisher, Jr., Vicki Meguire, Jean Price, Julia Becker and Daniel Biehl. The original footage was filmed by Julia Becker with help from Sarah Young on super 8 film, later extensively edited on videotape with music added by Joseph P. Biehl, Jr. An original recording of "Brazil" performed by Steve Schmidt is featured in this segment. The Caravan Project was made possible by funding from the New Forms: Regional Initiative regranting program, co-administered by Helena Presents the Colorado Dance Festival with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts' Presenting and Commissioning Program, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support provided by the National Endowment for the Visual Arts Project Grant, the U.S. West Foundation and the Monatana Arts Council. Thank You to all the Montana communities which hosted the Caravan Project in the Summer of '95: Missoula, Hamilton, Dillon, Twin Bridges, Nevada City, Gallatin Gateway, Anaconda, Havre, Fort Belknap, Miles City, Broadus, Colstrip, Ryegate, Moccasin, Great Falls, Simms and Helena. Bye, Jack! We love and miss you!

The Caravan Project- Part One: Sphinx Construction
In Part One you can watch the Travelling Sphinx as it is created in artist Daniel Biehl's front yard at 320 West Lamme Street in Bozeman, Montana in the wet spring of 1995 (note that he was only one of fourteen artists, but this footage was filmed by his spouse Julia M. Becker and edited by his brother Joe Biehl, so it's rather subjective). Recreated from the chassis and cabinets of a Terry Rambler 1952 teardrop trailer, it becomes a mobile sculpture over the course of six weeks of intensive ...
