Sponsored by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, the Indiana town of Friendship welcomes pioneer weapons enthusiasts by the thousands. Among them is our own Kentucky Afield Host Tim Farmer. Surrounded by period attire, marksmen, traders and craftsmen who yearn for yesteryear, its easy to see the role that the Kentucky long rifle played in the settlement of a nation.

History of Hunting in Kentucky Part 2
our series on the history of hunting in Kentucky continues with part II, "Market Hunting." In early settlement times, game laws and conservation practices didn't exist. In its place was over harvest, which decimated many native wild animal populations. Eastern elk, river otter and bison are just some of the species extirpated from the state, while populations of wild turkey and white-tailed deer nearly disappeared.

Here's an excellent example of what is called a "Kentuck Rifle". However, the Kentucky rifle as many of you may know actually had it's origins in Pennsylvania, but because of it's association with Frontiersman like Daniel Boone, it became know as the Kentucky rifle. Now let me go ahead and show you the maker's name here on the lockplate...right down here...I believe it reads "S. Spangler", and Spangler was a Pennsylvanian who developed this early percussion cap type firing mechanism up here ...
