The Island, a gem on Chicago's West Side
Just after Memorial Day Tyler Rice, a college student who lives in The Island with his grandmother took me on a walking tour of his neighborhood. The Island is a small, stable, integrated pocket of Austin, bordered by Cicero and Oak Park. It spans the area from Roosevelt Rd (1200 S) north to the Eisenhower Expressway, from Central Ave (5600 W) west to Austin Ave (6000 W).

Chicago's North Kenwood - Oakland neighborhood (some call it Bronzeville) spans the area from 39th St south to 47th St and Cottage Grove Ave (800 E) east to Lake Shore Drive. The area's seen a boom in new construction, blending in with its stately greystones, but it still has a long way to go. This is the final part of a four-part set. It begins at 46th and Woodlawn, and ends at Lake Shore Drive.
