Com uma população de 233.795 habitantes, Kiel está situada às margens do Mar Báltico. A cidade foi a primeira base naval até que as instalações foram desmanteladas após o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Kiel foi largamente destruída na segunda guerra mundial. Foi reconstruída mas os planejadores da cidade falharam em reavivar a antiga traça da cidade. Por isso, Kiel é menos pitoresca que outras cidades de Schleswig-Holstein como Lübeck ou Schleswig.
