View of the (frozen) Missouri River from the unofficial (?) overlook on the Gavins Point Nature Trail at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area (near Yankton, South Dakota). This overlook trail ends at a cliff with vertical drop of about 50-60 feet ... if you take one step too many, you could be overlooking the world from the great beyond. To the east is another overlook (with a shelter and a fence, not really near a cliff). Date is February 15, 2009.

Zandkreek Dam
Aerial footage of the Zandkreek (Sand Creek) Dam. With a length of 830 metres, it separates the Oosterschelde from the Lake of Veere. Huge caissons (11 metres long, 7.5 metres wide and 6 metres high) were necessary during the construction of the dam, which was completed in 1960. Due to their immense weight, the seabed had to be strengthened with a layer of plunging stone, gravel and sand before the caissons could be put into place. A slide show (with embedded video) of a walk on and along the Missouri River at Gavins Point (including the nature trail) in the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, near Yankton, South Dakota. The river (Lewis and Clark Lake) was frozen over (but you could hear it creaking and groaning every now and then). The bluffs/cliffs were interesting and a bit dangerous. The video includes an encounter with eight wild turkeys. But I did not encounter any people on the river or on the trail. Too cold ...
