The Caravan Project- Part Two: On the Road
Title:
The Caravan Project- Part Two: On the Road
Description:
In Part Two, we see the variety of Caravan rigs out on the open highways of Montana, the meeting of the Southwest Montana contingent in the Kmart parking lot in Bozeman, and travel to the rendezvous with the entire group at the first venue at Fort Missoula on the Fourth of July. The artists assemble their installations on a glorious summer day and welcome the curious crowds. In the spring of 1995, fourteen Montana artists, as individuals or small groups, constructed mobile sculptures, installations and participatory presentations which would travel to seventeen rural venues throughout the state of Montana that summer. The brainchild of Rene Westbrook, the six weeks of travel provided a lot of fun, all sorts of weather phenomena and difficulties along the way. The Montana Artists Caravan was composed of Rene Westbrook, Cathryn Mallory, Bobby Tilton, Leslie van Stavern Millar, Bev Beck and Stephen Glueckert, Joe Batt, Michael Peed, J. Kathleen White, Jack Fisher, Jr.,Vicki Meguire, Jean Price, Julia Becker and Daniel Biehl. The original footage was filmed by Julia Becker with help from Sarah Young on super 8 film, later extensively edited on videotape with music added by Joseph P. Biehl, Jr. An original recording of "Brazil" performed by Steve Schmidt is featured in this segment. The Caravan Project was made possible by funding from the New Forms: Regional Initiative regranting program, co-administered by Helena Presents the Colorado Dance Festival with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts' Presenting and Commissioning Program, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support provided by the National Endowment for the Visual Arts Project Grant, the U.S. West Foundation and the Monatana Arts Council. Thank You to all the Montana communities which hosted the Caravan Project in the Summer of '95: Missoula, Hamilton, Dillon, Twin Bridges, Nevada City, Gallatin Gateway, Anaconda, Havre, Fort Belknap, Miles City, Broadus, Colstrip, Ryegate, Moccasin, Great Falls, Simms and Helena.
