The Pennsylvania Turnpike. From New Stanton to the Susquehanna River

Title:
The Pennsylvania Turnpike. From New Stanton to the Susquehanna River

Description:
This is a video of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from New Stanton to the Susquehanna River Bridge. This video includes a drive through of the following tunnels in order, the Allegheny, Tuscarora, Kittatinny, and Blue Mountain tunnels allong with a shot of the South Somerset (eatsbound side) travel plaza at the 112 mile marker and some scenic shots of Pennsylvania. The following are the orinigal tunnels from when the turnpike first opened, eastbound of the Allegheny and Tuscarora Mountain tunnel, and westbound of the Kittatinny and Blue Mtn tunnels. I was traveling eastbound so you'll see the original tunnels of the Allegheny and Tuscarora Mtn from then the turnpike first opened. The video ends with a shot of the nuclear power facility on Three Mile Island. You'll see the iconic symbol of a nuclear power generator which is the cooling towers. There are two sets of them, one set per reactor. We all know what happened to one of the reractors in the mid 80's and thank god our safety standards prevented a full thermonuclear meltdown like what happened in Chernobyl i the former USSR. But enough of that and back to the PA Turnpike. It's the worlds first paved toll road and America's first super highway. The first section of the turnpike, or Penna Pike as some locals call it ran from Carlisle to Irwin and opened on Oct, 1 1940. There is a video on the Pennsylvania Turnpike site which details it's long and rich history so click on the link if you want to see it, http://www.paturnpike.com/news/americasDreamHighway.aspx Here are the conversions for our European viewers from mph to kph. 65 mph = 105kph, 55mph = 90kph, and 5mph = 10kph.

Gateway Travel Plaza in Breezewood, PA
This is the Gateway Truck Stop in Breezewood, PA. It's at exit 164 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76/70). This truck stop dates back to sometime in the thirties, just about when the Pensylvania Turnpike was built. The Pa Turnpike, or the Penna Pike as some people call it was the first modern paved toll road in the world. It should be noted that TA doesn't own this truck stop. The Gateway is one of my four most favorite truck stops in the US. The other three are the Iowa 80 in Walcott, IA ...

It was at two prevoius Six Flags parks and they were Six Flags America in the Washington DC area and Six Flags astroworld which was in Houston. Next on this site was Viper ...

TMI generators at Columbia,Pa
A slide show of two large steam generators bound for Three Island Nuclear power Plant. They were parked for a day and a half in Columbia. Since the overpass at US Rt.30 cannot support their 550 ton weight., the 4 lane expressway needs to be closed for them to drive across the highway. That will be the only night time movement of the generators.
