Title:
Rat Cutlery RC-3 knife: Small Tactical Done Right

Description:
Once past that pleasant distraction of RC's model, Nutnfancy reviews the good Rat Cutlery RC-3 knife in this video. This little RC-3 would function nicely as a fixed blade EDC option or small tactical role. Produced for five years under license with the Ontario Knife Company, the RC-3 is indeed a measurable improvement over the Ontario RAT-3. The RC-3 sports a more comfortable and better textured micarta handle. This handle also is thankfully longer for better gripping options and has an exposed tang that terminates in a useful triangular pommel a useful feature for impacts. Its 3.4 inch 1095 blade does not break new ground vs the RAT-3 version but it remains an ideally shaped and versatile blade shape. The RC-3 does have a slightly thinner blade (thickness) which is advantageous for utility and tactical roles. Fit and finish is excellent and just a bit better than the RAT-3, which still remains an excellent choice for the same POU. The RC MOLLE sheath is versatile and includes many more secure mounting options than more simple but still serviceable RAT 3 sheath (reference the RC website for great pictures on this). The price on the RC-3 might be bit higher than the previous version however you will get more for your money and it remains reasonable. A couple of downsides: the edge comes to you dull and the relief grind will need backing off to realize razor sharpness. (just like the re-profiled RAT-3 shown) and the Velcro retention strap on the MOLLE sheath would be more durable with a snap. But other than that, the RC-3 is mostly thumbs up: a full flat ground blade, blackened handle screws which allow handle maintenance, excellent epoxy finish on the 1095 steel blade, good jimping and choil, upside down and airborne-capable sheath, a good selection of colors and blade options, and a reasonable carry weight for the strength provided. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7 out of 10 NOTE: Normally, with this much material to cover including the Ontarion/Randall knife relationship and RAT3 comparisons (and the hot babe), I would do two videos. But for convenience I just fused them together this time, well see how that plays.

Rat Cutlery RC-4 knife: Small Survival
For a compact choice in survival or tactical knives, the little RC-4 by Rat Cutlery is a good play. Upsides include: superb tan epoxy finish, grippy and well-formed micarta handles, great blade shape, excellent Kydex sheath with MOLLE attachments, and good jimping on spine. Given its length limitations, the RC-4 could still do a commendable job in wilderness tasks. Downsides would include: higher prices than some other similar, in-category knives (BM CSK II, Cold Steel SRK, Spyderco Fred Perrin, SOG Government Agent [discontinued sadly]) and thicker blade gives it more weight than might be necessary for the POU. And RC does indeed market this as a tactical blade for soldiers judging from its MOLLE-capable sheath and the included instructions. The blade shape would be equally at home here as well as EDC and overall utility use. Overall it is a good albeit over-priced option for these roles. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 6 out of 10 (price considered)
Knife Review : RAT Cutlery (RC-3)
Quick knife review, I hope you enjoy it!
Cold Steel SRK: Soldier Ready
A Nutnfancy top pick for a deployment knife for combat-engaged soldiers, the SRK (Survival Rescue Knife) has a lot to offer the serious blade user. For one it's affordable. It's hard to find a quality stainless steel knife in this category (6 to 7 inch blade) and almost impossible to get it for around $60. By comparison the also-excellent amd similar Fallkniven A1 costs at least twice as much as an SRK. It is your affordable, quality alternative that should offer just as much capability. The SRK hasan impressively 3/16 thick spine that should excel in prying, chopping, cutting, wood splitting, and stabbing taskswithin its six inch limitations (spoken to in the video). The modified bowie clip blade is purposeful, avoiding nonsense design features that would detract from both its survival and combat usefulness (like sweeping curves meant more for Hollywood than the wilderness). Of course its just a 6 blade so that means it comes with some limitations and thats to be expected: it wont chop, hack, or cut as easily as a big ole survival blade like the CS Trailmaster. Thats just physics guys. But it sure is lighter: total carry weight is a mere 11 oz and that makes the SRK a top choice for soldiers and wilderness-bound NCs who need a strong fixed blade but not the knee-grinding loadout weight of a full sized blade. Its Kraton handle is outstanding, offering excellent purchase, shock absorption, and non-slip characteristics for your cutting tasks. And the whole package is topped off with another excellent waterproof ConcealEx (plastic) sheath that doesnt absorb water weight and is quick-attachable as well. Overall its a compact design that, for its size and weight, offers high levels of Survival Capability and Combat Efficiency (both Nutnfancy terms). And it will resist rust A LOT better than any 1095 steel blade and do so affordably. The Cold Steel SRK knife then remains a top choice for Nutnfancys recommendations for a carry-along, do everything combat blade. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 8 out of 10 (for compact survival blades)
RAT 7 Survival Knife
The RAT-7 promises to be a good survival knife, especially for the money. Good steels, ergonomics, blade shape, and an OK sheath round out a good design. Maybe not the wood splitter the CS Recon Scout is, the RAT-7 nevertheless is a rugged, high value combat/survival blade that measures favorably against much more expensive alternatives.
Ontario RAT-7 knife: Choppaholic!
Demo chopping and wood batoning of the excellent RAT-7 survival knife by Ontario Knives. There are some other good to great variations of the RAT like the ones offered by RAT Cutlery. However I prefer at least a 7" blade in this type of knife, for these types of tasks whenever possible. That's because a larger blade will hack, strip, and split wood more effectively and that type of work compromises most of my survival knife use. Tactical knives will have different considerations but even there, more reach is better reach. SAFETY NOTE: Using sharp and deadly tools in the wilderness can be dangerous. One missed swing and you could cut an artery up there. These videos will show imperative common sense safety measures to keep YOU safe from your own blades (and falling timber). Accidentally cutting YOURSELF is the biggest danger you will face in the woods.

Cold Steel Roach Belly: Featherweight Slasher
For around $12 you can get a super light, excellent defensive blade in the Cold Steel Roach Belly. Yes the steel is just 4116 Krupp but its razor sharp, finish is nice and bright (great for a sheepdog defensive knife), its fast in hand, wicked sharp, and is forgetfully light in carry. It weighs out, with sheath, at an incredible 3.5 oz. Thats because CS wisely choice to keep the blade thin (but adequately thick at 2.5mm) and put on a super light handle. The spine has some purposeful jimping as well. The blade shape is deadly with excellent draw cut and piercing capability. Downsides are the slick handle that is a little short (especially for extraction from the sheath) and the non-QD sheath that leans more towards utility than tactical use. But the sheath is also lightweight and wont retain water. Even as a EDC FIXED BLADE choice, Roach Belly should excel. And theres no brand myopia here at all (another Nutnfancy term): its just Cold Steel happens to be the one producing these well-made, high value knives that provide such great versatility. I dont see any other 2.6 oz SS well-designed slashers out there at $12. So if the budgets tight and you want a fixed blade with decent reach (4.5, good for the weight) consider this featherweight knife. The CS RB wont bust the budget or your loadout weight; nor will it impress your friends. But at 3.5 oz total weight its an easy proposition to always have with you, quietly awaiting defensive duty that hopefully will never come. I have two. Chopping Down a Tree with Ontario Marine Raider knife
Its always more efficient to use your Sawvivor or Sven backpacking saw to fall a dead tree up in the backcountry. Remember we find our driest, best firewood inside such vertically standing dead wood. But it needs to be felled and processed with your saw and your blade of course. But sometimes you may be without such a saw, having only your chosen survival knife with you. If its a blade like the affordable, high-value Ontario SP10 Marine Raider knife then youre in good hands. Furthermore cutting down standing dead wood remains a good test of the chopping capability of a given knife. Here, after hiking in with Allie, we chop down a smaller tree with the SP10. Its an impressive survival blade and delivers on my initial impression (see my table top review of the SP10).
Benchmade 940: Best Tactical or EDC Choice
If there's a right way to make a manual folding tactical or hunting knife this is it: The outstanding Benchmade Osborne Axis 940 series of knives. All makers take note of these knives: ultra fast and easy deployment due to perfect pivot construction and balance. Who needs an auto with deployment speed like this. It really doesn't get any better than this. Add superior construction throughout, rock solid lock up, great 154CM blade steel, a cool purple titanium spacer on the back, strong clip, and great colors to this superior design. Also the both the clip and reverse tanto blade shapes offer great utility in every day carry (not too wide). At around $125 these knives are actually a good deal. Heirloom quality. They are some of my absolute favorite tactical or EDC (every day carry) folders.
Cold Steel Ti-Lite Zytel: Limited Tactical
An affordable, classically styled tactical folder. Upsides: strong and comfortable liner lock design, relatively light (4.0 oz), AUS 8 steel blade, good tip-up pocket clip (mounted too low on handle though), and long handle. Downsides: obstructed deployment stud (hard to deploy conventionally), limited purpose dagger type blade, overly thick, and has a mud-gathering ventilated handle. I don't carry this one too much because of its limited purpose and the above problems. Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 6 out of 10
