BROOKLYN CENTER The Brooklyn Center Police Department is hiring its first full-time juvenile officer with $244,000 in new federal grant money. The money comes from the COPS Hiring Recovery Program, which uses federal stimulus funds to help financially strapped law enforcement agencies hire additional officers. Brooklyn Center was one of just 14 agencies selected for the funding statewide. Nearly 200 had applied. NEW HOPE The Crystal/New Hope Business Council golf outing tees off at noon tomorrow at the New Hope Village Golf Course. The outing is sponsored by TwinWest Chamber of Commerce. A portion of the proceeds go to area community organizations. CRYSTAL A Crystal woman is one of the newest members of the St. Cloud State University Alumni Association Board of Directors. Elizabeth Sween received a degree in business from the college in 2003, and works at UnitedHealth Group in Golden Valley. She has stayed active in the St. Cloud State community as a campus recruiting team member and by interviewing prospective finance and accounting majors. The board of directors oversees alumni awards, student mentoring, affinity programs, travel, reunion and networking programs. ST. LOUIS PARK Registration is open now for the third annual St. Louis Park Crime Prevention Golf Outing on Friday, September 11 beginning at 8 a.m. at Meadowbrook Golf Course, 201 Meadowbrook Blvd. in Hopkins. Sponsors are also being sought. The event includes hole prizes, prizes for best scores, beverages on the course and lunch after the event for all participants.The outing benefits the Crime Prevention Fund, which assists the police department in preventing crime and providing reward funds, along with supporitng National Night Out, Neighborhoood Watch Programs, the chaplaim program, citizen's academy and more. BROOKLYN PARK A Children's Penny Carnival and Movie in the Park are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night at Brooklyn Park's Central Park. The Brooklyn Park Crime Prevention Association will also sponsor a giant bouncy house for the kids as part of the city's National Night Out celebrations. Concessions will be available. A classic car show and concert is also planned Sunday afternoon at the Community Activity Center.
