Boston Kiltics Nova Scotia Celtic Fiddle Dance Story & Song
We are four Bostonians who perform celtic folk music from Nova Scotia. We all have at least one parent from Nova Scotia and spent lots of time there growing up. We also embrace being from Boston and have been influenced by the rich Irish traditions of our area. Our fiddler Doug Lamey is the grandson of Boston Cape Breton fiddling legend Bill Lamey. He's been playing since he was a kid and has studied with some of the greats from both the Cape Breton tradition (Buddy MacMaster) and Irish fiddle scene (Tommy Peoples). http://www.douglamey.com/ We are lucky to have two of the best stepdancers in the Boston area, Pam Campbell and Christine Morrison. Pam is the daughter of fiddling legend John Campbell. Christine is the daughter of Peggy Morrison who is president of the Gaelic Club in Watertown, MA. Pam & Christine have been dancing together for 16 years and have shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac to drop some names. I sing in both English and Scottish Gaelic. I play guitar and Irish Tin whistle and make my living as a musician/storyteller. I am steeped in Irish music on my dads side of the family (Clifford's in Sliabh Luachra) and Scottish on moms side. I recieved my MA in Folklore from Memorial University in Newfoundland. http://www.cliffmcgann.com/ We've all played together informally over the years but are finally making it official. We've settled on the name The Boston Kiltics as it captures our love of Scottish folk music but also the fact we are from Boston and proud. This was recorded for a local TV station and is only our second official gig together. Visit us on the Web @ http://www.bostonkiltics.com Visit us on MySpace @ http://www.myspace.com/bostonkiltics
Traditional Folk Art of Nova Scotia, Canada
Folk art, a form of creative expression that is distinctively Nova Scotian, often takes its inspiration from the sea. A well-known Canadian, most recognized for his folk art is Reed Timmons. He built a shop by his home in Pleasant Bay and took to whittling whales out of pieces of wood when there was a downturn in the fishing industry, and the rest, as they say, is history. The brilliant colors that are used on the puffins, fish, seagulls and other local critters reflect the array of colorful fishing boats that dock in the harbor near his shop.

Wings of Wood
For Centuries, Creole wood carvers of Louisiana have produced outstanding works of art in their carvings of working wooden decoys, decorative decoys, and most recently, realistic sculptures of birds and waterfowl in their natural habitat. This documentary presents the work of Charles Hutchison, his brother Rudolph Hutchison and his son Eric Hutchison. Their work is in great demand. In 1980, their habitat group of two life-sized bald eagles sold for $24,000. The late Charles Hutchison developed the "soft feather" technique, where each feather is carved and painted to scale from an individual piece of wood. It is not unusual to find more than 5,000 pieces of wood in one of the Hutchison carvings.

Culture in Nova Scotia, Canada
On the east coast of Canada, Nova Scotia offers a spectacularly beautiful and diverse maritime landscape along with a unique culture that results in sightings of men in kilts, playing their bagpipes, and the uplifting sounds of Celtic music in the air. Steeped in Scottish influence, Nova Scotia celebrates its Celtic heritage and military pride with daily and annual festivals, and at special colleges devoted to perpetuating Gaelic themes.
