Description:
The West Somerset Railway themed its 2009 Spring Steam Gala 'The Big Four' celebrating the grouping of the LMS, LNER GWR and SR later becomming British Railways. With this themed event a wide range of guest locomotives from all four corners of Britain attended this really big and memorable event. The weather was to be the finest the WSR has had for a spring gala in over 4 years! Locomotives featured in this film: GWR 4900 Hall Class 4936 Kinlet Hall LNER A4 Class 60019 Bittern LMS Black 5 45231 The Sherwood Forester SR rebuilt West Country light pacific 34046 Braunton WSR mogul 9351 The film begins with 4936 and 60019 making light engine movements to the WSR. Then moving onto the first day of the gala, starting with LMS Black 5 45231 which can be heard slipping up breifly twice up the summit at Churchlands en route to Crowcombe Heathfield. After leaving Crowcombe 4936 Kinlet Hall makes its way down through Norvis Bridge to Bishops Lydeard. SR rebuilt West Country 34046 Braunton powers up the 1 in 92 summit at Yard Bridge to Stogumber. Having left Williton 45231 is seen climbing up Castle Hill. WSR built mogul 9351 powers up as she approaches the ideallic Stogumber. The first A4 to travel onto the Minehead branch 60019 is seen at Nethercot curve having picked up speed. And concluding the film 4936 Kinlet Hall is seen at Bicknoller. Sadly 6024 King Edward I was unable to make it to the gala due to a cracked firebox. And 6100 Royal Scot was unable to make it during the first weekend of the gala, and was left on display at Bishops Lydeard. Please note: All lineside shots were taken by permission of the WSR as I have a lineside pass. I would like to David Oldham and Philip Griffin who took me to most of the locations along the WSR.
