I discuss solutions to the Hampton Jitney system. The routes and fare structure need to be changed. I would have all south fork (Westhampton line & Montauk line) buses travel via LIE to Rt.135 south to route 24 to connect with Farmingdale LIRR and LI Bus N70/71/72, then travel rt.109 to Sunrise Highway (route 27). The buses would make a stop at Sunvet Mall to connect with S54,57, and 59 buses, and then procede east on route 27 non-stop to the Hamptons. North Fork line buses would continue their usual route on the LIE making a stop in Ronkonkoma by the LIRR only. I would develop a system of fare zones, Manhattan and the rest of NYC would be zone 1, Nassau and western Suffolk would be Zone 2 (this would be the stops at Ronk LIRR, Farmingdale, and Sunvet Mall. And eastern Long Island (5 East End Towns) zone 3. Fares from zone 1 to 3 would be $18 each way, senior/disabled &10. Fares from zone 2 to 3 would be $8, senior/disabled $5. Fares within the east end (zone 3) would be $2 senior/disabled $1. Coach USA and other companies run similar fare structures, so why not HJ? True, those buses probably dont have "attendents", just drivers, and no free snacks/water, but its a BUS not a resteruant. The snobs can always use Hampton Luxury Liner. Of course these changes wont happen as long as Hampton Jitney is run by it's owners. It would need to be taken over by Coach USA, Greyhound, or even the MTA. But I feel it is urgent these changes take place. The trips wont take much longer, in fact, they'll probably be quicker to the south fork since Sunrise Highway (route 27) is less congested and quicker than the LIE. Making public transporation cheaper means more people will take it, reducing the amount of cars clogging the roads, reducing CO2 and pollution emmisions, and improving the quality of life. It is about time we make the right choice for the people and the planet.
