Alan Meckler Jupitermedia

Description:
Jupitermedia CEO Alan Meckler on Value of Mediabistro, Conferences and a Decade of Web Media Deals.... Jupitermedia CEO Alan Meckler is one of the most intriguing and successful entrepreneurs in the new media space. His firm recently acquired Mediabistro the journalism blog, networking/jobs and training site, for $23 million. I sat down with him yesterday, after his panel at the paidContent conference, to have a wider ranging chat about the conference business, the Mediabistro acquisition and some reflections on his past 15 years and current acquisition strategy. He told me that a big part of the value proposition in Mediabistro is its job boards and online training -- two key areas of expansion at Jupitermedia. -- Andy Plesser Posted on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Alan Patricof at paidContent
New Media Investor Alan Patricof: "This old guy can pick 'em," Fortune Earlier this week, I interviewed venture capitalist and longtime media investor Alan Patricof at the paidContent future of business media conference at the Waldorf. Alan's fund is paidContent's sole investor. His excitement about the event echoed an observation by Fortune magazine in a feature by Oliver Ryan titled "The old guy can pick 'em" which Fortune covered the last paidContent event: Patricof hovers like a vigilant tennis parent at a juniors tournament. Tuesday's event was not junior, it was the big leagues. Nearly everyone in the business media world was on stage from bankers Steven Rattner and John Suhler, to Dow Jones Publisher L. Gordon Krovitz, Om "GigaOm" Malik, Reed Media CEO Tad Smith, Fox's Neil Cavuto, CNET CEO Neil Ashe, Forbes lead investor/rock guitarist Roger McNamee and many others. The formal, cavernous Grand Ballroom might seem to be an odd choice for a media start-up, but it worked. For me, having attended numerous awards events in the room over the past 20 years, it was inspiring to see all this materialize out the hard work and smarts of a Rafat Ali and his scrappy group of blogger/journalists. Alan and his partners have been investing in media properties for 35 years since he initially invested in New York magazine. He's excited about new media opportunities and is making a number of early stage investments, mostly under $3 million. His new company is Greycroft Partner. He believes in the emergence of niche, vertical media including the Huffington Post, where he is also an investor. For Rafat to have built this juggernaut from his Los Angeles home is both astounding and inspirational. Congrats to Rafat, Staci and whole team. Looks to us at the purple channel that Alan sure "can pick 'em." -- Andy Plesser You can grab the embed code of this interview right here. Something important to say
Should Online Video Advertising Matter to Publishers? ...
http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/brightcove-land.html As video integration into newspaper and magazine Web sites accelerates, many wonder if in-stream advertising will prove to be profitable. We know that many of the big newspaper publishers are expanding video offerings but most are not yet successful in selling ads in or around their clips. But are in-stream ads the total value proposition of video? Adam Berry, VP of Brightcove, who speaks in this clip from the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable, begs to differ. He says that video is an essential part of a successful web site and the greater value is the ultimate success of the site and the value of its audience. Good video makes for a better site. Amen. Perhaps a corolary would be newspapers using photography to make a richer experience, but not selling ads on the photo? After all, video production costs have become close to still photography for some publishers who are using inexpensive video cameras. Another Win for Brighcove with CondeNet Today, Brightcove announced an agreement with CondeNet to provide video services for its properties. The company has been on a roll lately with recent deals. See Beet.TV's reports on its recent agreements with The New York Times and AOL. Video Has Value to Marketers Beyond the Pre-Roll, Execs Say For marketers, the value of online video is not necessarily in-stream ads either, as is pointed out in the conversation by Bud Rosenthal, the CEO of TurnHere, the producer/syndicator of informational videos created for corporate clients. Bud makes his comments in the beginning of this segment. Shoba Purushothaman, CEO of the NewsMarket, a company which distributes corporate videos, makes a similar point. Online video is a powerful tool for marketers -- and getting the point across with information vs. conventional advertising can work very well. This part of the roundtable was moderated by Erick Schonfeld, co-editor of TechCrunch. Addendum...Can you Digg this? Some publishers like Revision3 are making progress ...

The New York Times Readies HD Online Video Channel As ...
http://www.beet.tv/2008/10/the-new-york--2.html The New York Times has launched a new HD-format video player with a 16:9 wide-screen frame. Other new features include a redesigned video library, a "Most Viewed" rank, and tools to share videos to social sites like Facebook and Digg. The new video player is from Brightcove, the Boston-based video services company. Previously, The Times streamed its video using The FeedRoom. This is the first newspaper implementation of Brightcove 3, the company's new publishing solution. With the technology, The Times has the capability to stream video at DVD-quality of 1.5 megabits per second and higher. Called Dynamic Delivery, it allows publishers to serve videos to users based on their connection speed. It is currently streaming HD video for Showtime and FEARNet, a Brightcove spokesperson told Beet.TV. Plans are underway at the Times to deliver HD video online, Ann Derry, Video and Television Director told me in this interview. This would be the first newspaper to deliver video in true HD. Beyond the newspaper, Times videos are distributed on on multiple platforms, including TiVo, broadcast television including NBC News and on JetBlue's flight entertainment. Since video is being seen on so many platforms, the company is shooting and editing all of its videos on HD. Ann tells us: "We assume it can be anywhere. And if it's going to be anywhere, we want it to look good." Brightcove has been doing well with newspaper publishers. It provides video publishing for Dow Jones, The Washington Post and others. The New York Times Company is an investor in Brightcove. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer Disclosure: Beet Media LLC has done video production work under contract to The New York Times Company.

Keith McAllister, Mochila
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 Mochila Enjoys Growth in Digital News Syndication Marketplace Mochila, an online marketplace for syndicated news and feature content, has increased distribution of its media by 35 times since late last year, according to a spokesperson for the company. Mochila currently offers rights-managed content from 360 top content brands to its 3,800 members and is adding half a million new content assets each month. The Associated Press, Reuters, Getty and hundreds of others already offer their content through the site. Mochila's connects content owners, publishers and advertisers to everyone's advantage and isn't facing much competition, so this impressive level of growth makes sense. Most of Mochila's members acquire ad-supported content for free, but articles, photos and video can also be purchased a la carte for a fee. CEO Keith McAllister told Andy that Mochila will launch a new feature called Mochila Sections this August, which will let big-brand advertisers own the brand experience over verticals like health, family, and automotive. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer http://www.beet.tv/2008/07/mochila-connect.html

Charlie bit my finger - again !
Even had I thought of trying to get my boys to do this I probably couldn't have, neither were coerced into any of this and neither were hurt (for very long anyway). This was just one of those moments where I had the video camera out because the boys were being fun, and they provided something really very funny.
