It's a very damp 13 January 2002 and a red Class 47 and Virgin set head north at Micheldever into the remarkable smoke screen being laid by 4472 Flying Scotsman as it races towards Southampton. After dark, a small audience gathers for Scotsman's return. A Wessex Electric and Stopping service pave the way before the steamer dashes past, leaving swirling drifts of smoke as people share the experience with each other and, remotely, on the phone.

A very wet 30 May, 2007. A London-bound train pulls into Andover just as Clan Line is due with a VSOE special, causing some consternation among the intending viewers - The passengers take a while to load and Clan Line rushes past while the train is still in the station. It's much quieter at Newbury, eight hours later, as the returning special roars through, but there's still a lot of interest from the platform. 'When's the next steam train?' someone asks - 'About an hour' is the reply, and ...

6 June, 2009 and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley leaves Didcot in the early morning to rendezvous with a Cathedrals Express at Banbury. A quiet, if damp, passage through Foxhall Junction is disrupted by an HST heading for Reading. More than twelve hours later a small but dedicated band gather to watch it pass Bicester, this time with the train in tow. It's a slow progress, with plenty of whistle, but once clear of the station the driver opens the regulator and heads for the Chiltern Hills....
