Sometimes you are surprised and have no place to put the resulting video. This is one of those fun 40 seconds of video that did not end up in any final video but it is too cool to leave un-broadcasted. This video of a Double-Crested Cormorant (diving bird) that happened to be in Three Sisters Spring in a time when there was no Manatees. I wish I was better prepared to take the video of the bird, he was really fun to watch.
Double-crested cormorant drying itself
A double-crested cormorant dries itself, then flies away, in Almansor Park, Alhambra, CA. The feathers of cormorants are not waterproof, and therefore do not trap air underneath. This makes it easier for them to dive but on the other hand they need to dry their wings by airing them after getting wet.

Brandt's Cormorant diving for fish
While SCUBA diving at Pelican Rocks off of Cabo San Lucas, a Brandt's Cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus) repeatedly returned to the same area to catch fish. I waited for it to return and was lucky enough to film it catching a coral hawkfish (in slow motion). I was at around 15 meters deep, but cormorants have been recorded to at least 45 meters. While not being the most graceful fliers, they are fantastic underwater and right at home patrolling the reef for a meal.
