Cypriot Maronite Arabic, still spoken by most of the 130 elderly Maronite Catholics in Kormakiti (Korucam) in northern Cyprus, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Brought to the island by Maronite fleeing Lebanon at least 700 to 1400 years ago, a very unique group of people. For those who are from Cyprus, I would understand what you have against the Turks. On the other hand, Cyprus does not unfortunately, a very low percentage. The Cypriot Maronites come from Lebanon, rather your a Muslim or Christian Lebanese, you are Phoenician and should not be sucked into the media and loose your culture to Arabism. So the Cypriot Maronites fled Lebanon to Cyprus the same way our Phoenician ancestors have done so and how we still do! For example: the summer war. I care deeply for Cyprus and all the inhabitants that belong on the island (meaning get out Turkey)! As for the Cypriot Maronite Community, they should be very proud; speaking a slightly mixed language although still holds the principles of the Phoenician dialect and Aramaic language! It is heavily practiced in the Maronite church threw prayer and communities; this is how it survived for so long. |
