But it is sort of very beautiful, the response," Bourke told Vieira. "I suppose, 35 years later, to find that people are so fascinated by it and have so enjoyed it, is slightly overwhelming ... and all the comments on the YouTube site, they're so positive. It is marvelous that so many people are getting so much enjoyment out of it." They retold the story of going to London's Harrods department store in 1969 out of curiosity. A friend had told them she had asked the manager of the exotic animal department if she could buy a camel, and with classic British aplomb, he had dryly asked, "Would that be one hump or two, ma'am?" The two young men, who had grown up in Australia and recently graduated from college, were keen to see such a place. At the store, they spotted a 35-pound lion cub in a little cage. Like kids enthralled by a puppy in a pet store window, they had to have him. "It was an irresistible sight," Rendall said. "We were rather shocked when we saw this cub in Harrods in a department store in a very small cage. Not only was he totally entrancing, we must be able to do something better for him. He can't stay in a cage this size," he remembers thinking. They named him Christian and took him home to their pad in the Kings Road, the hippest address in the hippest part of London — Chelsea. "We had such a beautiful relationship with him," Bourke said. "There was such trust between Christian's former owners had been told the lion wouldn't recognize them. But the video shows the lion's obvious joy at being reunited with the two men. He ran toward us with such love and excitement in his eyes, and we felt exactly the same way. We were just so excited to see him, looking so big and healthy. The story had just turned out so beautifully, when it could have had a very different ending." Rendall referred to the film in describing the reunion. "You can see in that clip his body language," he said. "When he first starts seeing us, he's looking, looking. Is it us? Is it us? And then suddenly, he says, 'Right, this is them.' And down he comes. And there wasn't a moment that we ever doubted that it was going to be a wonderful greeting ... we never doubted it." Bourke and Rendall saw Christian a final time in 1974, by which time he had doubled in size and was now king of the jungle, with a pride of lionesses and a batch of cubs. "He still recognized us," Rendall said. "He was with wild lionesses. He had a litter of cubs and his genes had been passed on back into the wild. After that time we saw him, he was never seen again. It was like a final farewell ... he was completely integrated back into the wild." The experience moved Rendall, who lives in London, to devote his life to conservation; today he is a trustee of the Adamson Trust. Bourke, who became a dealer in Aboriginal art in his native Australia, is also a supporter of preserving wildlife. Both hope that the millions of people who have been so moved by the clip contribute to the cause. "We're just hoping that people who have enjoyed this clip — it's a phenomenal number — if they would want to contact the George Adamson Trust through www.wildlifenow.com and support us and support conservation, it would be wonderful to contribute to George's memory," Rendall said. |

He made his new territory along the Tana river, but when the Wakamba herdsmen kept bringing their livestock to his hunting ground, he moved on. George Adamson said in his autobiography, "I used to count the days on which we hadn't seen Christian, but when they reached 97, I gave up recording them in my diary." Because a lion can live from 12 to 15 years in the wild, Adamson believed that Christian ended his days in the Meru National Reserve only a few miles up river. "Lion Man" Gareth Patterson, author, environmentalist, and the person who continued George Adamson's lion rehabilitation work, revisited Kora in 1998. ![]() | Christian The Lion Full version Music Video HQ Watch in HD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhzCk6TLXTw this video can now be downloaded @ myspace http://www.myspace.com/danielavideo I made this tribute for Christian using footage from the movie 'Christian The Lion' you can also purchase this Dvd from the following link http://www.bornfree.org.uk/shop/acatalog/Videos_and_DVDs.html music by: Dolly Parton Sung by: whitney houston 'i will always love you' Christian was a lion purchased in 1969 by two Australians living in London, John Rendall and Anthony 'Ace' Bourke (sometimes erroneously cited as Ace Berg) from Harrods department store. They had discovered him for sale in Harrods' exotic pets department and, concerned for his conditions and fate, decided to buy him. Rendall, Bourke and their girlfriends Jennifer Mary and Unity Jones cared for the lion until it was a year old. Christian's increasing size and the cost of looking after him led them to the realization that they could not keep him in London for much longer. The solution came when Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, stars of the film Born Free, visited Rendall and Bourke's furniture shop, where Christian spent his days. They suggested that they ask the assistance of George Adamson, the Kenyan conservationist who, together with his wife Joy, was the subject of their movie. Adamson agreed to help them rehabilitate Christian into the wild at his compound at Kora National Reserve. Adamson slowly introduced Christian to an older lion 'Boy' and subsequently to a female cub Katiana in order to form the nucleus of a new pride. Tragedy struck several times: Katiana was possibly devoured by crocodiles at a watering hole. Another female was killed by wild lions. Boy was so injured that he lost his ability to socialize with other lions and humans, and was shot through the heart by Adamson after fatally wounding a man. That left Christian as the only surviving member of the original pride. Adamson continued his work, and over the course of a year the pride established itself in the region around Kora, with Christian as the head of the pride started by Boy. When Rendall & Bourke were informed by Adamson of the successful result in 1971, they traveled to Kenya to pay the visit to Christian that was filmed in the documentary The Lion at World's End. According to the documentary, Adamson warned Rendall and Bourke that Christian may not remember them, but the film shows a first cautious lion suddenly leaping onto the two men, wrapping his arms on their shoulders and licking their faces. The documentary also shows the female lions, Mona and Lisa, and a foster cub named Supercub welcoming the two men because of the influence of Christian. Rendall details a final reunion that occurred in 1974. By this time Christian was successfully defending his own pride and had cubs of his own -- and he was about twice the size he was in the 1971 reunion video. Adamson warned them that it would most likely be a wasted trip as he had not seen Christian's pride for nine months. However they discovered when they reached Kora that Christian and his pride had returned to Adamson's compound the day before their arrival. Rendall describes the visit he, Bourke, and George Adamson made: "We called him and he stood up and started to walk towards us very slowly. Then, as if he had become convinced it was us, he ran towards us, threw himself on to us, knocked us over, knocked George over and hugged us, like he used to, with his paws on our shoulders." The reunion lasted until the next morning when everyone went to bed. According to Rendall that was the last anyone saw of Christian. Adamson counted the days after that visit until Christian's return, but gave up waiting after 97 days If you want to write to John and Ace or send a donation please write to: George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust 16A PARK VIEW ROAD LONDON N3 2JB UNITED KINGDOM |
