Title:
Lost City - Part 1
Description:
In this episode of EXPLORING NEVADA, youll head east from Las Vegas, through the stunning Valley of Fire, to a fertile river valley that lies against the Utah and Arizona borders, just north of what is now Lake Mead. Its a land rich in history and prehistory, a land where a thousand years ago an ancient people farmed, prospered, and then suddenly disappeared, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological remains and unanswered questions. Much of their material culture has been safeguarded in the Lost Museum at the northern tip of Lake Mead, in the town of Overton. We speak first with museum curator Kathryne Olson, who has spent years studying the Native American cultures who have made this valley their home. We then travel with museum archaeologist Eva Jensen to a dig site representative of the many sites hurriedly excavated by the U.S. Park Service before being submerged under the waters of Lake Mead when Hoover Dam was constructed in the 1930s. Youll also get an inside tour of the Lost City Museum, whose collections and exhibits feature the cultures of the early Basketmakers, the Anasazi or Ancestral Peublo and the Southern Paiute, whose descendants continue to make their home in these lands. The museum is open seven days a week. For details call 702.397.2193. www.nevadaculture.org
