Title:
TRUE Allies With Six Nations-2of9

Description:
TRUE - Two Row Understanding through Education With Six Nations presents Why We are Allies with Six Nations, 2 Oct. 2009, Brantford Ontario T.R.U.E. (Two Row Understanding through Education) is a grassroots citizens' group located in Brantford , Ontario . This group holds a series of monthly lectures with question and answer sessions that are designed to inform and help to educate non-native citizens across Canada in an attempt to defuse the growing tensions within the South Western Ontario area. It also hopes to explain why the people of Six Nations feel they should have a say in land development, among other issues. We want to be part of the builders. Building bridges of communication, respect and understanding with our Brothers and Sisters of Six Nations. We believe that to accomplish this we will need time, patience, courage and a little prayer. The Two Row Wampum Belt: This belt symbolizes the agreement and conditions under which the Iroquois welcomed the settlers to this land. "You say that you are our Father and Son but like Brothers." This wampum belt confirms our words. These two rows will symbolize two paths or two vessels, traveling down the same river together. One, a birch bark canoe, will be for the Indian People, their laws, their customs and their ways. We shall each travel the river together, side by side, but in our own boat. Neither of us will make compulsory laws or interfere in internal affairs of the other. Neither of us will try to steer the other's vessel. Thus far this agreement has been kept by the Iroquois people. Guest speakers: Rolf Gerstenberger, United Steelworkers local 2005 Tom Keefer, CUPE local 3903 Steve Watson, Education Coordinator, Canadian Auto Workers Rebecca Johnson, Christian Peacemakers Teams Sarah Dover, Lawyer and specialist in indigenous Law

Birch Bark Canoe
This is my canoe that Atkamik natives of Quebec Canada helped build, it is made of birch bark and cedar and laced together with spruce root and pine pitch at the seems. There are no more Iroquoise canoe builders left that I know of probably do to the cutting of old growth birch trees by logging companys in upstate ny. I am trying to preserve the traditional ways of our people for the future generations. Living two worlds.
