Brenda McKean describes some of the strange paranormal activity she has witnessed on the grounds of the Harper House. The Harper House is located next to the Bentonville Battlefield, and was used as a field hospital for wounded Civil War soldiers. The front yard of The Harper House (and the surrounding grounds) served as a triage area for the incoming wounded soldiers. Visitors have reported seeing the ghost of John Harper in the house, and on the grounds. Strange lights and cold spots have also been reported. According to one witness, there are 6 intelligent ghosts (of dead Union soldiers) who hang-out around the Harper House and the Visitors Center. The Bentonville Battlefield is also reportedly haunted. People have heard cannon fire, rifles, shouts, and seen phantom fires and apparitions. The smell of gun smoke, and decaying human flesh has also been reported. At Bentonville 80,000 Civil War soldiers fought over 6,000 acres of land.
