Giant List of Banned Books Burned in Bonfire--Fahrenheit 451
Description:
A giant effigy of Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" is burned in this sculpture presentation as part of the NEA's "Big Read" program. The sculptor is Rick True, seen here at Clackamas County Community College in Oregon setting the artwork on fire. When the cover is finished burning, it reveals a hanging plaque that quotes the antagonist of "Fahrenheit 451" declaring the obsolesence of books: "Remember Montag: the public itself stopped reading of its own accord." Before it was burned, the spine of the giant book was titled "Fahrenheit 451" but the cover was a list of prominent books that at one time were banned in America. Some on the list included Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms," John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5"
