From April 12 through Aprill 19, 2009, the GK Bayani Challenge 2009 Sulu took place in Sulu and Zamboanga. Fittingly dubbed "Only For The Brave", the annual GK event took place in the midst of the kidnappings of 3 International Red Cross workers. "The paths of friendship has begun between Christians and Muslims who are building homes and communities together. We have rediscovered our fraternal bonds because we chose courage over greed, nobility over compromise." - Jose Ma. Montelibano, Inquirer columnist, GK advocate and hero. Once again the spirit of GK was challenged and showcased. This video captures the very spirit of GK: "A convergence of courage" A convergence of mission" "A convergence of leadership" "A leadership of first to serve, last to benefit" "A volunteer force building houses for others even though they are without" "No one left behind" "From bravery to generosity" "From thanksgiving to rebuilding" From celebration to glad tidings to the whole nation" The team of brave-heart volunteers left Zamboanga for Sulu on Easter Sunday April 12, 2009. So fitting to start a journey on the day Christ rose from the dead, symbolizing salvation and renewed life in the Christian world. These volunteers from all walks of life bring with them renewed hope and a new beginning to the residents of Panglima Estino. Note at mark 9:08 of the video, a cross and a crescent prominently etched on a rock with the letters GK painted at the bottom.and hand prints impressed upon the soft concrete. Profound? Prophetic? Symbolic perhaps? A Theology professor of mine once said "A symbol dies a natural deathwhen it no longer means anything." Hence, a symbol should thrive when it means so much. This is THE GK WAY!!!
