Though beautiful, the waters off Whitefish Point have been called "The Graveyard of Lake Superior", as more shipwrecks have occurred off of Whitefish Point than any other part of Lake Superior. Among these was the famous Edmund Fitzgerald, which sunk just 17 miles NW of the point. The lighthouse at Whitefish Point is still active. Opening in 1849, it is one of the oldest lighthouses to still be active on Lake Superior.
