Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Typical freeway and road travel)
Description:
This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves one of my favorite things, freeway travel. For those of you who are not from the US, this is typical freeway and road travel. Watch all the signs and scenery whiz by. This was north of St. Paul, coming back from the Mall of America around 7:30 PM (yes, it's near sunset). The first bunch involves interstate 35E, then late in the video, County Road 19 (of Ramsey County). There's plenty of scenic areas to look at, along with road signs. One of my favorite things involving freeways is that of exits. A sign comes up showing that you'll find county road XX at exit 152. Another shows logos of various businesses for gas, food, and lodging. A third shows how far it is, in miles, to an exit telling of a different county road. Then along comes the sign showing "exit 152". Through observations, I've noticed that the exit number is based on the mile marker. If you just passed mile 153, you expect to see "exit 153" if heading in the positive direction or "exit 152" if heading in the negative direction. In this case, it's the positive direction. A letter follows if there are more than one exits within the span of mile markers, and 106 and 107, here, is an example. Outside the exits, it's the scenery and it's a close second.

![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Exploring Wisconsin) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves a road trip into Wisconsin (and back). On Wednesday, Sep 17, I went on a road trip to many different places. One of which was going into Wisconsin about 10 or so miles. This video is actually two segments stitched together. The first segment is where I'm crossing over a bridge going into Wisconsin then, after the sudden scene change, it's the opposite direction, leaving Wisconsin and heading back into Minnesota (via Stillwater).... |
![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Low clouds) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves something I don't see often - 3 levels of clouds, including stratus clouds barely 400 feet above the ground. There's also cirrus clouds (seen in the second part, where I point the camera up). Altocumulus clouds are not easily seen, but the cirrus clouds are. This was recorded shortly after leaving. There is no sound in this video for one reason - it's all wind. |
![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Rocks near Stillwater MN) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves some rather interesting rocks I found on the return trip from Wisconsin, a bit west of the Stillwater area. The rocks are sort of like those you'd find around the Grand Canyon area (I've never seen the Grand Canyon outside TV (I haven't been that far south nor west)....). These rocks have the banding effect visible, layers that distinguish age zones. It was difficult to get a clear view of the rocks so I needed to actually rotate ... |
![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Crossing onto Manitou Island) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves crossing onto Manitou (MAN it oh) Island. Islands are foreign to me so this was a unique opportunity to get that camera out. We just looked around - there's pretty much nothing but houses here, of which I've left out. When I think of an island, I think of a piece of land out in the middle of the ocean or a sea, and of a substantial size (ie over 20 square miles), not out in the middle of a lake and a small size, even though ... |
![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Mississippi River Overlook) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves the last destination of the Sep 17 road trip: the Mississippi River. When I looked at the official highway map, I noticed that I was very close to the Mississippi River (I thought it was another 300+ miles further east.). Upon seeing it, and playing level 11 in Bubsy a bunch (which involves a river), I thought of visiting the Mississippi River. We got lost on how to find it (since we didn't have the map with us), but a trucker ... |
![]() | Trip to Minneapolis 2008 (Duluth scenic overlook) This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves a scenic overlook at a rest stop in Duluth. On Friday, Sep 19, 2008, I went on my second road trip, this time to Duluth, a port town at the far western edge of the Great Lakes. Barely visible (hazy) is Lake Superior, which seems to be about 200 feet below. Near the end is some kind of telescope that is coin-operated. I never used it because I don't carry cash. In addition, I had my 7 MP camera with 3x zoom (and tricks to minimize ... |

![]() | Bubsy (original) full game (part 1 of 17) A full game of "Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind" (Sega Genesis version) is played. Although I have roughly 4000 hours' play time for this particular game, almost all of that is spent playing around rather than playing the actual game in a normal way. One major thing I enjoy is that fact that some enemies when gliding upon landing on them, allow for extreme height and great speed due to speed falling. While I'd normally pause the game a lot to perform these stunts, I avoid it as ... |
![]() | Platform Masters development (Jun 21, 2009) - overworld hill troubles The overworld in Platform Masters is used to get between worlds, replay story scenes and levels, and a few others. Trouble is, I can't seem to make up my mind on how I want the hills for the texture arranged. Forming the boundaries of the land, doing the waves for the ocean, and adding in the rock/snow distinction are the easy parts. 6 hours for the hills alone seems a bit out there. Things like the decals (the bridge, city, lake, etc. mentioned) should be much easier (I hope). When I get ... |
![]() | TSO's current looks (as of Oct 1, 2008) After the long stall with my progress (I'm expecting these and more to come), I've done the landscape about as far as I want to go in terms of quality for the landscape. The main change is the texturing and the 3D effects. There are now texture fades used, lighting, and 3 "channels". alphablend prevents further detail as it's too slow (directx is my intent, but haven't had the motive to learn it). To get the appearance I want, I'll need about 25000 draws or so in each frame (and this is for ... |
