Description:
A look at the March 19 Sun-Sailor For this week's top story I talked to city clerks in the area to see what - if any - role they have played in the ongoing battle for the Minnesota Senate seat between Norm Coleman and Al Franken. Sandy Langley from Wayzata, Lin Vee from Orono and Jeanette Moeller from Long Lake all received subpoenas regarding rejected absentee ballots in the case, but all found themselves in the fortunate position of being able to answer those questions electronically or through certified mail. Moeller was the closest to testifying in person. She said she received a check for travel reimbursement and was prepared to go to St. Paul, but was contacted the day before and told she would not be needed. Right now more than 300 members of the Minnesota Clerks and Finance Officers Association are meeting in St. Cloud for their annual convention. Langley, who will serve as vice president this year, said she expects a lot of talk about the case during the convention and joked that she will probably hear a lot of "war stories" this week. On page four we note some changes made at Orono City Hall in an effort to improve the service provided to residents. City Administrator Bill Wells mentioned that the city is now accepting Visa and Mastercard for virtually any fee owed to the city - something the city council has wanted for a long time. The change will be noted on upcoming utility bills and in the city's spring newsletter. Another change is a new accounting software program that is slowly starting to filter into the day-to-day business at city hall. Finance Director Ron Olson said not only will the software handle payroll and accounts payable and receivable, but it will also allow department heads to view up-to-the-minute budget reports and provide more meaningful reports to the city council when it is requested. The full versions of these stories, photos from the Wayzata Community Church Carnival, Orono and Wayzata school news and much more can be found in today's issue of the Sun-Sailor and on our website mnsun.com.
