Modern Che Po To Kay
While working at maple camp the Ho Chunk people would set up shelters such as this one called a che po to kay. The, of course, did not use tarps but large slabs of either white pine bark or elm bark on the roof and animal hides, usually bison or whitetailed deer, as walls. The Ojibwe people, an eastern tribe, would have called something similar a wig wam. As the weather warms up and we get more into maple sp flowing I'm hoping to show more about this building and other parts of the mapling ...
