Yazid openly went against Islamic teachings, such as drinking and gambling. Yazid has ordered Imam Hussain to give him his allegiance, but the Imam refused, keeping the protection of Islam in his mind. An Islamic state was meant to establish justice, peace and unity between all religions, (weather they be Muslim, Christian, Jew, Atheist or of any religious belief or background) races and genders. Yazid had gone against this. Imam Hussain, and his family who are the family of the Holy Prophet Mohammed, and his companions were all put under siege in the deserts of Karbala, Iraq. After a ten-day siege in which for a number of days they were refused water, the men were all martyred in a fierce bloody battle on the tenth day. Among the deaths included youths as young as 14 who fought and died, and infants as young as six-months old who were simply slaughtered by the enemy. After the bodies littered the sand of Karbala, the opposing army of Yazid attacked the camp of women and children. They ravaged the camp, slaughtered some children and the viels of the women were taken. The women and children along with the sole male survivor, Imam Sajjad (as), were taken in chains across the desert sand. Zainab (sa), who was the brother of Imam Hussain and grandaughter of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (saw), openly spoke out against the oppressions and injustice against the family of the Holy Prophet and to Imam Hussain. The Holy Prophet Mohammed (saw) used to say: "Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain". Imam Hussain's oppressions were the Holy Prophet's oppressions, and Imam Hussain's tribulations were the Holy Prophet's tribulations. Surely we are God's, and to him we shall surely return Allah loveth not that evil should be noised abroad in public speech, except where injustice hath been done; for Allah is He who heareth and knoweth all things. Imam Ali (as) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (saw), and whom Shia Muslims believe to be the rightful successor of the Holy Prophet (saw). Imam Ali's (as) tragedies and oppressions are an inspiration to hundreds of millions around the globe, weather they be Shia, Sunni, or even Christian. "Bring out thy people from the depths of darkness into light, and teach them to remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative. (Surat 14, Ayaat 5) Imam Ali (as) had amazing patience, piety and generosity. He was a lion on the battlefield and was the most generous off it. He always looked to serve his Lord, giving everything in his power for that Lord. Every one of his strikes on the battlefield was in the way of God, if he ever became angry, he would stop fighting for awhile and than resume fighting. When asked about this, his reply was he didn't want to kill out of his own anger, only out of God's anger. When the Islamic state came under his ruling, he ensured equal rights for Muslims, Christians and Jews living in the state. He had full knowledge of both the Bible and the Torat. In his time he was oppressed by his own people, his right to lead the Islamic state was taken from him, and his wife, Fatima Zahra (sa) [the daughter of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (saw)] was oppressed and killed. Imam Ali (as) met his Lord on Lailat al-Qadr (The Night of Power) in Ramathaan at the age of 63. He was struck on the head by an assassin whilst Imam Ali (as) was in prostration, leading the morning prayers. The strike intensified an old wound and the sword was poisoned. After he was hit, Imam Ali (as) said that his killer should be given water before himself, an example of his almost limitless generousity. After three days the Imam (as) died a martyr. His killer said regarding this, that the strike that he hit Imam Ali with would have killed any man, but because it was Imam Ali in prostration to his Lord he didn't die. Imam Ali (as) is buried in Najaf, Iraq, in a shrine that is a place of pilgrimige to hundreds of millions across the world, including both Sunnis and Shias. Imam Ali's (as) character has caused him to be loved and respected by hundreds of millions across the globe, from different religions, demoninations and schools of thought.
