Title:
Good Morning New York! [pt. 6]
Description:
The first section of the actual walk taken from 6 o'clock in the morning to 7 o'clock in the morning, before most of us would even consider walking in Times Square. Most of this film focuses on Times Square, and some of its side-streets. Especial interest is given to 46th Street, between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, where this short film ends. We will return to Times Square in an hour, when it is much busier. Most people would not pair a Chopin "nocturne" with the morning in New York, but it may be getting hackneyed to pair images with what we expect to hear. Anyway, I had old film stock that was not perfect, but servicable, and I deleted the video portion, running the music on track 3. The music is the best I could do at the time, with the equipment available (a perennial problem for camcorder users who like classical, or dynamic music). The piano is made by Fazioli, which may further complicated matters, since it is a brilliant instrument, by nature. I may render this same film with some other music, to prove that music has great power to change the attitude of the viewer. There are any number of interpretations for the images I chose to offer. I might say "relfection" is what I hope results from the careful study of the images, and what they mean to us now, in 2009. This is part 6 of the 2009 "Sylvester Can't Sleep" series, which is for the most part, light-hearted. When you can't sleep, grab a camera.

From 34th St. Uptown to Times Square, I walk through a crowd with a friend, not knowing what the camera records. I go to a pharmacy, an uninteresting enterprise, but the address is 4 Times Square. Instead of hearing bits of conversation, mostly my own, I underlaid this film with a piece of grand organ music which I played in 1996, when I was the music director at St. Francis of Assisi Church (RC), Mt. Kisco, New York. The organ is a Rodgers. I was ... |
