California - Tule Lake Migratory Bird Refuge
Title:
California - Tule Lake Migratory Bird Refuge
Description:
Psalms by the Lake. From my trip on June 2, 2009. Sorry for the jittery camera - it's VERY hard to hold it still when getting tight close-ups. Tule Lake is an intermittent lake covering an area of 13,000 acres (53 km2), 5 mile (8.0 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) across, in northeastern Siskiyou County, California, along the border with Oregon. It is fed by the Lost River. Tule Lake was the crucible for Japanese American resistance to internment during World War II, where thousands of Japanese Americans met America's betrayal of their hopes and dreams with anger, defiance and rejection. Tule Lake was the largest and most controversial of the ten War Relocation Authority WRA camps used to carry out the governments system of exclusion and detention of persons of Japanese descent, mandated by Executive Order 9066. The Order, which eliminated the constitutional protections of due process and violated the Bill of Rights, was issued February 19, 1942 following Japans attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Two-thirds of the 120,000 persons of Japanese descent incarcerated in American concentration camps were American citizens, an act that culminated decades of anti-Japanese violence, discrimination and propaganda. http://www.TuleLake.org/history.html The lake is located 1.5 (2.4 km) southwest of the town of Tulelake and is part of the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Klamath Project. The Tule Lake War Relocation Center, a Japanese American internment camp, is located to the east in neighboring Modoc County. Canby's Cross is located about three miles south of the lake, the site where General Edward Canby was killed by the Modoc chief Kintpuash, better known as Captain Jack. The elevation of the lake is 4,035 ft (1,230 m). ![]() | Time lapse - Interstate 5, California/Oregon Border I took a trip to Sacramento and Back, and on the way back over the pass, I wedged my camera into the sun-visor and recorded this. It was about 45 minutes of video, but I compressed it down to about 5 minutes of zooming along, much more entertaining this way. Filmed using a Nikon coolpix L14, car was a Ford Taurus SHO (which overheated a couple of times in the 103° weather, which is why at some point you can see me getting out to pour a couple of liters of water into the coolant overflow tank.... |

He ran and hid in the rocks for a long time, so I had to sit it out for a while, waiting for him to come out. My patience finally paid off. This Chuckwalla finally felt comfortable enough with me around, that he stayed out for at least 20 minutes ... |
