The Lost Vegas

After working in a casino, every time I walk through one these days, I get pangs of anxiety. I went to Las Vegas on a 3 day business trip with Il Fornaio. It is the one time each year that all the General Managers and Chefs, along with the CEO, President and all the executives from our corporate headquarters in Corte Madera, about 70 people in all, get together for an annual get-together. As part of our activities, a few of us, (Mauro Mazzon - chef from Burlingame, Luigi Mavica - chef from Palo Alto, Ulisse Vincinanza - GM from Del Mar and myself) decided to travel just a few miles outside of Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon on a guided hiking tour. It is hard to describe that only a 20 minute drive from all the glitter and madness is a serene oasis of colorful rock formations, Big Horn sheep and uninhabited wild terrain. "Hike" is an understatement, however. Our guide, Neil, gave us all we could handle. We were scaling steep mountainsides, traversing sandstone cliffs and generally manuvering through trailless territory just trying to avoid spiny agave and furry tarantulas. We reached Red Cap Peak in about 2 hours. From there, Las Vegas appeared a mere zit on the vast complexion of the Mojave desert. THEN - we had to do the whole thing in reverse. Coming down the mountain was more difficult than going up. These 50+ year old knees didn't like all the jumping and jarring at all. I think we were all happy, though, that we were able to escape the asylum called the "Las Vegas Strip" for the afternoon. The music for this video is a heavily edited version of Sugar Will by The Dave Matthews Band featuring Carlos Santana.
