Our texts this morning will be photographer Galen Rowell and select bible passages. His photographic vision grew out of a unique mix of athletic abilities, technical skills, intellectual understanding, and artistic intuition, which enabled him to identify, chase, capture, and interpret those ephemeral moments when light and landscape interact in ways that transcend specific situations. Page 252 Rowell Restrospective, F. Lanting After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" Matthew 17:1-5, NIV His passion for the mountains, not his mountaineering skills, provided the real fuel for his photography. One could argue whether his firsthand, close up experience of them made for better landscapes at a distance, but there is no denying that at any range he could imbue them with the qualities of majesty and timelessness. Mountains in Rowells pictures, are the standards against which we might measure ourselves, the obdurate others of human existence. Andy Grunberg, Rowell Retrospective, p49 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Jesus in John 8:12 All photographs by Galen Rowell, 1940-2002
