plasma gasification

Title:
plasma gasification

Description:
Organic molecules (those that are carbon-based) become volatilized, or turn into gases. This synthetic gas (syngas) can be used as a fuel source if properly cleaned. Inorganic compounds melt down and become vitrified, or converted into a hard, glassy substance similar in appearance and weight to obsidian. Metals melt down as well, combining with the rest of the inorganic matter (called slag). Unlike incinerators, which use combustion to break down garbage, there is no burning, or oxidation, in this process. The heat from plasma converters causes pyrolysis, a process in which organic matter breaks down and decomposes. Plasma torches can operate in airtight vessels. Combustion requires oxidization; pyrolysis does not. Plasma waste converters can treat almost any kind of waste, including some traditionally difficult waste materials. It can treat medical waste or chemically-contaminated waste and leave nothing but gases and slag. Because it breaks down these dangerous wastes into their basic elements, they can be disposed of safely. The only waste that a plasma converter can't break down is heavy radioactive material, such as the rods used in a nuclear reactor. If you put such material in a plasma furnace, it would probably catch on fire or even explode.

Richland Plasma Gasification
InEnTec Environmental's proprietary Plasma Enhanced Melter (PEM™) transforms virtually any type of waste material into valuable commercial products including: - ultra clean fuels that can be used to generate electricity - a glass-like material that can be used to create items such as blasting grit or building materials and recoverable metals. The technology is currently being demonstrated in Richland, WA, where the PEM™ can process 25 tons of the community's waste per day.

News report: Startech waste-to-energy plasma technology
Startech Environmental Corp. http://www.startech.net Startech is the only publicly traded waste-to-energy plasma arc technology company in the world. They presently have three 5 ton/day installations in operation, with a number of other plants in various stages of implementation. A 200 ton/day plant being built by Startech in Panama will be the largest such plant in the world, and will convert ordinary garbage into hydrogen that can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity or directly as a fuel for combustion. The Panama plant is expected to be operational in 2008. "Waste is not garbage, but a commercially valuable, renewable resource." (StarTech Promotional Video.) What is Plasma? Plasma is simply a gas (air) that the Converter ionizes so it becomes an effective electrical conductor and produces a lightning-like arc of electricity that is the source of the intense energy transferred to the waste material as radiant energy. The arc in the plasma plume within the vessel can be as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit ... three times hotter than the surface of the Sun. When waste materials are subjected to the intensity of the energy transfer within the vessel, the excitation of the wastes' molecular bonds is so great that the waste materials' molecules break apart into their elemental components (atoms). It is the absorption of this energy by the waste material that forces the waste destruction and elemental dissociation. The Plasma Converter is computer controlled, easy to use and operates at normal atmospheric pressure, very safely and quietly.

JET Plasma
Joint European Torus (JET) plasma. Nuclear Fusion is the process powering the Sun and stars. In the core of the Sun, at temperatures of 10-15 million Kelvin, Hydrogen is converted to Helium by fusion - providing enough energy to keep the Sun burning - and to sustain life on Earth. A vigorous world-wide research programme is underway, aimed at harnessing fusion energy to produce electricity on Earth. If successful, this will offer a viable alternative energy supply within the next 30-40 years - with significant environmental, supply and safety advantages over present energy sources. To harness fusion on Earth, different, more efficient fusion reactions than those at work in the Sun are chosen - those between the two heavy forms of Hydrogen : Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T). All forms of Hydrogen contain one proton and one electron. Protium, the common form of Hydrogen has no neutrons, Deuterium has one neutron, and Tritium has two. If forced together, the Deuterium and Tritium nuclei fuse and then break apart to form a helium nucleus (two protons and two neutrons) and an uncharged neutron. The excess energy from the fusion reaction (released because the products of the reaction are bound together in a more stable way than the reactants) is mostly contained in the free neutron. The use of transformer action for producing the large plasma current means that the JET machine operates in a pulsed mode. Pulses can be produced at a maximum rate of about one every twenty minutes, and each one can last for up to 60 seconds in duration. The plasma is enclosed within the doughnut shaped vacuum vessel which has a major radius of 2.96m and a D-shaped cross section of 4.2m by 2.5m. The amount of gas introduced into the vessel for an experimental pulse amounts to less than one tenth of a gram.
