 | Splendid Geyser, Yellowstone, early July 1997 In 1997, Splendid Geyser erupted many times. This eruption occurred on or about July 8, 1997, at 0910 am. It was very tall, far above the nearest treetops, and shook the boardwalk. I estimated that it was more than 175 feet (53m) high, and may have been 200. My original estimate of the height might be excessive - the height here looks like about 125 feet or so; still, it is magnificent. Those who were present in 1997 will not forget these events. I was the only one present at the start of play, but the late Tom Hougham, a park naturalist, came by and we exchanged information. He noted that the start was one minute earlier or later than my watch stated, so anyone who wishes to determine the precise date could look in the logbooks for an early July 1997 play. I apologize for this video - it was taken on a (then) old VHS camcorder, and the present transfer is from a DVD into the format you see here. I do not apologize for the euphonious strains of my narration, which may betray my barely restrained excitement. I certainly hope that other videos of this magnificent geyser can be placed here; until then, perhaps this can give some idea of the splendor of this giant, until it may again become active.
