Sen. Brownbacks visit Sen. Sam Brownback was on campus visiting the nursing simulation lab and the BNSF training facility and to learn more about the colleges sustainability efforts. He spoke at the beginning of the meeting about sustainability and the economy. Sen. Brownback has supported a $750,000 request from the college that was included in an appropriations bill. The funding would support a proposed Center for Sustainability on campus that would serve as a resource for local education, business and civic entities on sustainability education and issues.   Lobbyists report Dick Carter, the colleges lobbyist in Topeka, spoke about happenings in the state legislature. The state will cut the amount it gives the college for this current fiscal year by 4.1 to 4.5 percent. For next fiscal year, the Senate has recommended a 10 percent cut, which does not include aid to students. The House of Representatives will deliberate finances in March   Awards and recognition ·         The Office Professionals League was recognized for raising $4,209.13 at their annual silent auction in November 2008. •Ruth Randall, dean, Curriculum and Academic Quality, has received Phi Theta Kappas Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award. •The Sun ran a story during the winter break on the International Archaeological Field School, in which assistant professor Dr. William McFarlane and JCCC students participated. • The respiratory care program was reviewed by a team from the Committee for Accreditation for Respiratory Care during an onsite visit in January. •Lindy Robinson, dean of business, was recognized for receiving the Award of Merit from the Kansas Advisory Committee for Career and Technical Education at the annual Kansas Workforce Summit in Topeka.   Olathe health partnership Dr. Terry Calaway reported on the Olathe health partnership. A formal planning group has been constituted to address the construction of an educational facility on the Olathe Medical Center campus. The group is co-chaired by Dr. Bill Osborn, associate vice president, instruction, and Dr. Dana Grove, executive vice president and chief operating officer. Subcommittees are headed by Dr. Jerry Baird, executive vice president (facilities); Dr. Marilyn Rhinehart, vice president, instruction (curriculum); and Dr. Dennis Day, vice president, student services (support services).          Actions taken ·         The board approved new courses in animation, architecture, fashion, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and information technology. ·         The board approved clinical affiliate agreements with the nursing program. ·         The board approved revised college policy 217.06, Service of Alcoholic Beverages for Special Events and Regular Operations. The revisions clarified the language, updated the campus locations authorized by the board, and authorized the college president to develop appropriate operational procedures to implement the policy. ·         The board approved the lowest acceptable proposal of $174,160.54 from En Pointe Technologies for the establishment of an annual campus agreement with Microsoft. ·         The board approved the renewal of the annual contract for background checks with HireRight Inc., at an annual expenditure not to exceed $88,000. ·         The board agreed to allow contract negotiations for groups to perform in the performing arts spaces in the Carlsen Center during the 2009-2010 academic year. ·         The board approved the academic calendar for 2010-2011. ·         The board approved the treasurers report for December 2008. ·         The board also approved bids for kitchen equipment for the hospitality management program, a 3D printer for the drafting lab, a Digidesign bundle for the music program, an addressing system for Postal Services and uniforms for Campus Services staff.   Swearing-in ceremony At the end of the board meeting, seven officers took an oath of employment as members of the JCCC Campus Police Department. Officers taking the oath were Larry Able, Don Emerson, Steve Hebauf, Jimmy Keaton Jr., Dwight Rhodes, Michael Wranich and Ed Vesey. Fifteen officers took an oath of employment in August 2008. The seven new officers will bring the total of JCCC police officers to 22.   Executive session The board met in executive session for 60 minutes to discuss the presidents mid-year performance review.
