![]() | BATTLE OF THE BELL MURAL Kiwanis Battle of the Bell Mural a Success Twentynine Palms -- Action Council for 29 Palms is pleased to announce its most recent community outreach project, Battle of the Bell Mural, was successfully completed at the Twentynine Palms High School last Saturday. The community of Twentynine Palms rallied behind the Battle of the Bell Mural, with over thirty-four businesses and forty-eight individuals donating their time and money for this historic mural event. "It was truly a memorable day for everyone involved, and I was pleased to see such a small community, like Twentynine Palms, come together for the children" said Hank Kraychir. On Saturday October 6, 2007, seventeen children worked with renowned master muralist Art Mortimer in completing a mural in one day. The painting started at 7:00 am and went on all day until about 5:00 pm. As the mural was being painted, nearly one hundred spectators and artists came and went throughout the day. The viewing area, located on a grassy knoll in front of the mural, was well supplied with donuts, pizza, fresh fruit, chips, cookies, water, orange juice, and milk throughout the day. A small informal mural dedication followed the painting of the mural. Art Mortimer, a native of Los Angeles California, has completed over 100 murals since 1971, and has perfected the "mural in a day" form of painting. Mortimer travels the country painting his historical murals, and is considered one of California's premier mural artists. He has taught art at several colleges in the Southern California area, but is perhaps best thought of for his historical murals. He takes great pride in learning about the subject matter before doing any sketches -- and after a great deal of information has been assembled, he delves into his art. Action Council for 29 Palms was please to have Mortimer back, to do his second "mural in a day" project; the first one was the basketball tournament at Lucky Park. Mortimer also completed the Flash Flood mural located on Adobe Road, downtown Twentynine Palms. "It was great to be amongst the children again" Mortimer said, "This was the first time I've been back to a high school since I graduated. It was wonderful to work with these Twentynine Palms High School artists, and hope I am invited back in the future." The Battle of the Bell Mural had been planned in stages for well over a year. In an effort to reach out to the community, Action Council for 29 Palms developed a community outreach program, which is led by Hank Kraychir. Community outreach murals are intended to be specific to a group and or location, without a great deal of fanfare. Twentynine Palms Kiwanis and Action Council for 29 Palms created a co-committee, which selected the content of the mural. Action Council for Twentynine Palms also worked closely with the Morongo Unified School District, which ultimately determined the mural location. Twentynine Palms Principle Amy Woods and art teacher Rowena Avery were also involved in coordinating the student body, campus staff, and in selecting the students to paint the mural. The mural was designed to honor the Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley high school football game tradition of playing for the Kiwanis Bell, which has been held annually since 1968. It is also intended to be a constant reminder to the children of Twentynine Palms High School that both local organizations, Kiwanis International and Action Council for 29 Palms, care about their future welfare - as does the whole community. The Battle of the Bell football game has displayed the highest ideals of friendly rivalry and sportsmanship since its inception, as such, Action Council for 29 Palms thought it was time to honor this significant event in mural form. All proceeds from Battle of the Bell Mural donations will go back to the children of the high school through the Twentynine Palms High School Alumni Association. In the past several years, the Alumni Association has been instrumental in raising money for band and uniform equipment, among other fund raising activities. The community of Twentynine Palms truly came together for the development of the Battle of the Bell Mural. Action Council for 29 Palms would like to publicly thank the following organizations, businesses, and people for making the mural a success for the children of Twentynine Palms: |

![]() | Plasticine Plasticine, a brand of modelling clay, is a putty-like modelling material made from calcium salts, petroleum jelly and aliphatic acids. The name is a registered trademark of Humbrol but tends to be used as a generic description in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Plasticine was formulated by art teacher William Harbutt of Bathampton, near Bath, England in 1897. He wanted a non-drying clay for use by his sculpture students. Although the exact composition is a secret, Plasticine is composed of calcium salts (principally calcium carbonate), petroleum jelly, and long-chain aliphatic acids (principally stearic acid). It is non-toxic, sterile, soft, malleable, and does not dry on exposure to air (unlike superficially similar products such as Play-Doh, which is based on flour, salt and water). It cannot be hardened by firing; it melts when exposed to heat, and is flammable at much higher temperatures. A patent was awarded in 1899, and in 1900 commercial production started at a factory in Bathampton. The original Plasticine was grey, but the product initially sold to the public came in four colours. It was soon available in a wide variety of bright colours. Plasticine was popular with children, widely used in schools for teaching art, and found a wide variety of other uses (moulding for plaster casts, for example). The Harbutt company promoted Plasticine as a children's toy by producing modelling kits in association with companies responsible for popular children's characters such as Noddy, the Mr Men and Paddington Bear. The original Plasticine factory was destroyed by fire in 1963 and replaced by a modern building. The Harbutt company continued to produce Plasticine in Bathampton until 1983. It is still manufactured today, but in smaller quantities, and is marketed once more as an art material. Plasticine is often used in animation. One of its main proponents is Nick Park, who used characters modeled in Plasticine in his Oscar-winning short films The Wrong Trousers (1992) and A Close Shave (1995). This technique is popularly known as claymation in the US, and is a form of stop motion animation. Plasticine is appealing to animators because it can be used with ease: it is moldable enough to create a character, flexible enough to allow that character to move in many ways, and dense enough that it can retain its shape easily when combined with a wire armature. Plasticine is also used in party games such as Cranium, Rapidough and Barbarossa. A similar product, "Kunst-Modellierton" (known as Plastilin), was invented by Franz Kolb of Munich, Germany in 1880. This product is still available, known as "Münchner Künstler Plastilin" (Munich artists' plasticine). |
