It is another example of their use of a steel drum after Cian learnt to play it for 'Northern Lites'. This is a version from the TV coverage of Glastonbury in 1999. I was there! This was the year someone drove a van into the moshpit. Strange. Even for Glastonbury.

The set will be put up in full in due course. This shows how much the band had developed in the 3 years since the 1996 Astoria show which has already been uploaded in full on my Super Furry Channel. This was their standard set opener at the time, and is sadly missed from their current sets. Enjoy! |

The footage comes from s4c's coverage which showed (almost) the whole concert. I will upload th other tracks in due course. This is also a good example of a performance in the fibre optic suits that were made for the Love Kraft tour. |
 | Super Furry Animals - Northern Lites (Big Star Version) (Glastonbury 2007) This is a rare live outing for the alternative version of Northern Lites played by SFA on their 'Hey Venus' tour in the style of Big Star / Teenage Fanclub. It's a great song even without the steel drums. I seem to recall Gruff inviting other bands to do a straight cover of 'Northern Lites' at the time it was released. He thought it would make a good straightforward rock track. Nobody obliged, so many years on, SFA seemingly decided to cover themselves! |

It is a good example of the band's use of the alien brass section which augmented them live at the time. The band also had some stage props, giving it the same look as their 'Fire In My Heart' video. When this song was played live at this stage, Cian actually played the steel drum live (as can be seen here). It was not sampled as many would assume. Also, this is a version that is pretty faithful to the album / single ... |
