 | Derek - Isaac Julien - Trinidad Film Festival Derek, in chronological order, records the work and life that stands at the foot of Derek Jarmans humour and spirit of being an artist. The filmmaker and actress, Isaac Julien and Tilda Swinton respectively, have produced and narrated a film on his life whereby the use of language is perpetuated to give some type of palpable meaning to British audiences alone, and to their own personal relationship with him. Through his interviews, notes and film footage, Jarman concurs that his sexuality was deeply repressed, and this facet is the undercurrent that runs through his work and is the bases of his films, like Sebastiane (1976), which had British audiences eager to peek at two men frolicking on a rock. Derek showed rare 8 film footage of the artist and his journey into a series of experimental and time lap pieces. At the Trinidad Film festival, Trinidadian audiences were privy to a man who expressed himself as who he was, and addressed subjects as sensitive and stigmatic as homosexually, HIV and of its oppression by the British government under Margret Thatcher. Jarman believed that film could be transcribed as painting and moreover understood his limitations as a painter. Film could transcribe into layering of the motifs that surrounded his inner infatuation of the self and self representation. Isaac Juliens objective is to arouse the interest and importance of his work to young British artists to a man who fought for his rights in the public eye, and lived the end of his life with dignity, acceptance and of his love of being. Juliens documentary is to acknowledge Derek Jarman as one of the most influential filmmakers in British cinema. Although of his importance as a contemporary filmmaker, Isaac Julien's production was compounded by an overly artistic and unmemorable monologue by Tilda Swinton which couldn't be understood as she wondered through the streets of London and at the subject's former cottage and stone garden. Derek failed to stimulate any interest at its premiere at studio film club during the Trinidad Film Festival. Eh, what de fock she manguing we with? |
 | Dame Lorraine - Traditional Carnival 2008 At the traditional carnival street competition in St. James last evening, a hefty crowd came out to support a handful of Old Mas performers. From the Midnight Robbers to the White Fruit Bats, masqueraders did their jig of speeches, dances and enactments. The Dame Lorine is a character taken from the French aristocrat from the 18th century. The costumes are an elaborate fanfare of hats, fans and large hoop skirts decorated with glitter. The dance of the Dame Lorraine may vary to a dainty chip or to a contemporary lewd, all on the ground Jamette wine, the latter generally is awarded with a ruckus applause. The essence of the costume is the exaggeration of the bosoms and derrière to fit the physical characteristics of the Negro woman. The sway of the hip and high position of derrière delights the sexual appetite of the observer. The clip shows the Dame Lorraine portrayed by a family of sisters. One Dame Lorraine has called her costume, short season as she complained over the difficulty of getting fabric to cover the length of her gown. The last is a tribute to the cricketer, Brian Lara. Towards the track of the Queen's Park Savannah and to the North Stand and its stage, Steelbands are in fierce competition to get into the panorama finals. The mood in the Savannah is thick and less festive as factions of supporters hail insults at each other.  | Ashraph on Trinidad Carnival Richard Ramsaran (Ashraph) has been working on a show that is related the state of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. This is his band launch set for the National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago in February 2008. Mr. Ramsaran has approached the subject with style we can call totally kitsch with puns on contemporary carnival designers. He has used materials such as paper, wire, beads, feathers and glitter from the King of Carnival suppler, Samaroos in Port of Spain, not China. All of his costumes are for sale, in many sections of cause. Ashraph has also casted in Papier-mâché the shape of an urn, and it acts as the body for his blue devils. Ashraph has played with the concept of deconstruction, and the fluidity of movement made from Papier-mâché plates to describe the traditional Carnival characters such as Bat and Fancy sailor dance. He has clearly streamlined his pieces which the nuances represent an informal take on the characters. A Jab Jab to him could be a simply mesh wire enclosed by a feather boa, with the shape of a heart at the centre. To add to the piece, small bells are attached.
