Chanting in Sanskrit, Kashmiri Hindu priests recite ancient verses as they conduct a havan on a Oct. 2008 night in Jammu, India for a sacred thread ceremony. This was the first night of the ceremonies. The two young men would receive the thread the day after this ceremony, which involved the uncle of the two men. The uncle is accompanied by two priests who were born and raised in the Kashmir valley.

On Feb. 23-24, 2009, Shivratri was marked by hundreds of worshippers at the Bharatiya Temple in Troy, Michigan, a suburb north of Detroit. The all-night ceremony was one of dozens held in Michigan, which has a rapidly growing Hindu community. In this video, the temple priest performs Abhishekam as devotees recite Sanskrit verses praising God. The ceremonies ended at about 1:30 am, followed by a prasad dinner.
